Word on the street early today was that the Downtown Safeway would be closing. So after a few quick calls and confirmation rom the store manager, I can tell you that yes, the store will close in June.

The Downtown Safeway opened in 1962 and is one of the few stores with the old school design. The manager said the store is to small to meet the demands of the Safeway " Lifestyle" stores and that the building needs a ton of work

It really is a shame to lose such a convience but at the same time there are some good elements. Now is the time for the Olympia Food Co-op board to take advantage of this opportunity and aquire the lease on this space before one of the corporate giants steps in with the ever so popular "Organic" Stores that have invaded the Co-op scene.

I say to all of you that want a decent store in the Downtown, call the Co-op office or tell them at the stores that we need them Downtown

It would be great if the coop could use this space. But if the roof is really bad, that might be a problem. Is Safeway abandoning Olympia? What's up with this cut and run attitude?

The coop is looking for a space between 5 and 10 thousand sq ft. This building has nearly 20 thousand sq ft of retail space. So, that might be a problem. Unless the Coop can Cooperate and co-locate with other businesses that could fill the gap in space requirements.

But who wants to move into a building with a busted roof?

roof..

Maybe the City of Olympia could purchase this location at a discount rate and fix it up.

coop

I would LOVE to see the coop in that space.  It would be the quintessential Olympia business that we need in that location.  Downtown restaurants would benefit, as well.  I wonder what the actual dollar amount for fixing the roof would be?

Agreed that the Co-op in that space would be great and a good central location in Oly. I had no idea that the Safeway was closing, heck everytime that I've been in there it's always seemed pretty busy.
