I know we have quite a few students that visit Olyblog.  Microsoft just launched a new program to give students professional-level developer and design tools at no charge!

Microsoft DreamSpark

Who can get this right now?
We are kicking this off in 11 countries/regions, giving DreamSpark to millions of students in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, China, Germany, France, Finland, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and Belgium. If you are not residing in one of the countries listed keep checking back, we will be adding more countries throughout the year.

Does that mean that I might not get in?
Possibly, if you are not residing in one of the countries listed, not attending an accredited university or not a member of one of the student organizations that we're connected with. But keep checking back, as we're working on adding more ways to verify your student status all the time.

What do I have to do to get this software?  Not much really, just select a product and follow the steps below.

  • Sign In with your Windows Live ID. If you don't have one, go get one here.
  • Get verified as a student. The system is linked to schools and organizations around the world that can confirm student status. Simply choose your country and school, enter your info and hit submit.
  • Download your products. Due to size of this tool, the files are quite large so make sure you have the bandwidth and enough space to bring them to your machine. We support the latest versions of both Internet Explorer and Firefox for your download.

Obviously there's a hugh

Obviously there's a hugh upside for Microsoft (if we get more folks using our platform == $$$).  The goal for Ozzy Sharon was to still get paid.  I like that they made corporate America pay for it.  Pretty much we have the same goal.

I like it

The future of the interweb will be brought to us by those who grow up with it as an assumption instead of as a discovery. Do you know if Microsoft is going to sponsor student competitions?

We are.  Imagine Cup is

We are.  Imagine Cup is sponsored by Microsoft.  The cash prize was recently doubled to attract more submissions.

We do quite a bit in the robotics realm.  A friend of mine owns a company based out of Southern Cal and I believe he won not only money but a partnership with our Embedded OS group as a means to run MILO.  Cool stuff but a tough market when you're competing with the likes of Sony (I know - pot meet kettle).  At its pinnacle MILO was capable of being your eyes and hands at the house from across the Internet.

Our research group sponsors and hosts a variety of events at colleges and universities worldwide.  Plenty more examples on the web.

I help in our annual campus recruiting drive and am continually disappointed in the candidates I interview.  The top tier schools always do well (MIT, CM, CalPoly, etc.).  The curriculum drops drastically when you reach state run public institutions.  Having an appreciation for BASIC development environments is one thing but earning credit for a COBOL class post Y2K doesn't make sense.  But it happens more than you'd think.

The only person I've recommended for hire out of a public school (Old Dominion) branched outside of the school program and earned certification on his own.  That was 8 years ago or so.  Glad to say he's still here, working out of Atlanta, and I run into him on occasion.

OK, ease my paranoia. Just how does Microsoft  confirm student status through the Internets? I'm not looking for a fight, just information on which I can make form  an informed opinion.

They just use the facial recognition system

based on images downloaded from all the school buses rigged with cameras. Jeesh. Everyone knows that.

Good question though, since school districts are pretty big on student confidentiality these days.

I thought

It was a hidden app inside of educational copies of MS programs that reports back to Redmond whatever info they need.  When it doesn't crash of course :-)
