Echos of Olympia

Olympia’s queer history, as rediscovered in my underwear drawer

Found in the farthest corner my underwear drawer, amid the ruins of the recently excavated bedroom (as we’ve been in the process of moving to the more-spacious rental next door): my shirt from Olympia, Washington’s first ever Queer Pride march (of which I was a primary organizer) in 1991. We put the damn thing together so quickly (the idea having been hatched one night while I was talking with my roommate, the filmmaker and AIDS activist Tod Streater (RIP Tod, I miss you every day), about 3 weeks in advance of Seattle’s Pride event, when we recalled that at 1990’s march, there had been enough of an Olympia contingent that we could have had our own.

Wow - thanks

Very cool of you all to link to my little story. When I get around to telling the rest of it (there was a lot more, of course), I'll link back here. Also, it's been 17 years since that first march (um, whoa) and one's memory is inherently fallible after all that time... I do hope I got everything right in the post you linked to, but if anyone reads it and remembers things differently, by all means they should feel free to leave a comment or otherwise contact me with either corrections of other details.

And besides the names of the people I mentioned in the post who were also involved in that first march (Anna Schlecht, among others), there are more names that are sort of on the tip of my brain... a really nice guy, for instance, who did original artwork for the posters, someone else who hosted that one formal planning meeting that I can recall (a "Craig" maybe? last name perhaps starting with an M but...?) - so if anyone has other details to contribute, that would be awesome, maybe something a little more comprehensive could be put together for future Pride events, a little retrospective, if you will.

And, who knows, maybe I'll actually make it back to Olympia at some point to see what's happened with the community since I left. I love Olympia terribly, didn't leave in any kind of optimal way... and I miss it every day.
