Part of the package uploaded this morning for the Planning Commission meeting next Tuesday includes five pdfs of public comment on the Larida Landing rezone for the downtown isthmus. My quick tally of the comments came up with 82 folks against and 53 for. This was just a quick talley and I tried not to county the folks that emailed more than once (you know who you are). And, some of the emailers were pretty vague, so I couldn't come up with whether they were for or against. Here are some nuggets. The Olympia Historic Commission against the rezone: Capitol Campus Advisory Committee against: A history lesson: A poem: Here are the files themselves:

Write the Council

Submitted by Thad Curtz on Mon, 06/23/2008 - 7:35pm.For right now, the members of the Planning Commission are the people who are in an actual decision making process - 11 citizens mostly from the city or the Urban Growth Area, appointed for overlapping three year terms by the Council. They'll be taking written testimony until June 30th at P. O. Box 1967, Olympia, WA 98507-1967. (Or email them at cpdinfo@ci.olympia.wa.us with the Subject line "Urban Waterfront Comment -- Jan W.") Of course, it wouldn't hurt to send a copy to the City Council now.
The Planning Commission will have an open meeting to discuss the issue themselves in July (no comment period), and then make a recommendation to the City Council). In September, the Council will have one hearing themselves and then vote on the rezone.
Thanks, Emmett

Submitted by emmettoconnell on Tue, 06/24/2008 - 6:58pm.In Olympia, I went to two years of public schools, three years of Catholic schools and several years at a co-op preschool. Most of my education came at public schools in Delaware and at a land grant college. Then I finished at Evergreen.
I have no idea who to blame for my being able to count, Wilson.

Submitted by Ehver Green on Tue, 06/24/2008 - 10:41pm.I'm talking about the chuckles when Tri Vo and several of his associates spoke just before public comment. Replay is Friday at Noon on TCTV and I'm sure The Olympian will post it pretty soon should you want to hear it for yourself.
This is a serious matter - for both sides. Both sides should act accordingly. It's sad to read those last two sentences again. Sides? That's pretty much Olympia. Sides in everything. Nothing gets done.
So many people who spoke against the rezone were for development downtown, just not in the proposed location. So, where? Where are their projects? This is the land Triway purchased. This is the project he's been working on for 3 years.
If all we're talking about is a view -- because every other argument is trumped by the fact that he can build whatever he wants within the current zoning -- then I don't see the OPC making a recommendation against the proposal. Ground level views won't be gone, though. You can still see the mountains from the North side of the building.

I had intented to but it's tough with 3 kids hanging on you! Originally I was going to get my office all to myself. Well, stuff happens and you've got to plug the laptop into the TV and receiver to teach your kids about civics. =)
EDIT: Yes, I politely asked my son, 9, to spend an hour with me watching the public testimony. I showed him the proposal's (which he said were cool) and then pictures of why people were against the proposal. He understands why folks would want to keep their views. He politics pretty well.
