I was driving to a friends house tonight I noticed a lot of Christmas lights up. This is great, it give Olympia a warm feeling. However, when I was driving back home late tonight I saw most of the lights were still on, this includes the lights downtown. I am a fan of Christmas but this is a waste.

OK so you have the LED lights GREAT, but why not take it a step further and put them on a timer. Have them turn on at 5:00 and turn off at say 11:00. It is just a waste of energy to leave them running. One set of lights might not make that huge of a difference but if everyone did this they would save a huge amount of resources and money. You would hardly notice the change, your in bed anyways.

Lets step up and be the city that actually makes a difference.

P.S. if anyone else has ideas for energy efficient holidays post them here.

Energy for Timers

Putting your LED Chritmas lights on a timer might help, but keep in mind that clock needs power too. I haven't found anything more up-to-date than 1985 (ick!) so this might no longer be true, but two timers each used 3W of power to do their job. [http://standby.lbl.gov/CEC_Workshop/Docs/meier_lit_review.pdf, page 9] A string of LED lights probably isn't much, if any, more than that.

new times old equipment

With everything being neatly packaged "green" for we the consumers to purchase from the big chains, I have yet to see anything really change product wise. Why not have solar power Christmas lights? All they would need is a panel, the lights sit on the roof and are only on at night anyway thus they could store the energy during the day. Talk about wasting, we usually toss Christmas lights after the holidays because they are made so cheaply anymore they are no good come the next year. They have high lead levels so say the warnings on the tags tied around them when you open the box, they blow fuses constantly. Some of these "green friendly" companies should step up, making products that really are better for the Earth and those who inhabit it. I am all for changing things for the better but, the "Green Movement" has been hijacked by companies selling the word Green, (product ads, magazine ads are shoving green down our throats hasn't anyone else noticed this), I guess I'd just like to see more change for the better and less rape of the word Green.
