This will be our first practice of the new year! Things have been moving along swimmingly at the space downtown, horns have been singing, drums have been quaking, and folks have been arranging songs of all sorts for many instruments. Come down at the times given to play some music, dance, or shout with us!

Aerial Dance Performance at the Brotherhood Lounge, Weds., Jan. 7th!

The Tallhouse Arts Consortium presents an aerial dance performance the first Wednesday of every month at the Brotherhood, next show is Weds., Jan. 7th. You may have caught the Tallhouse Arts Consortium in last Fall's Artswalk, performing acrobatics and aerial dance (trapeze, fabric) at Olympia Salvage. Come see their free performance at the Brotherhood, 8pm to 10pm. Tips for the performers are greatly appreciated!

First PBIA Advisory Board meeting of 2009

The first meeting of 2009 for the Parking and Business Improvement Area (PBIA) Advisory Board to the City Council will be at the MIXX 96 Conference Room this Thursday January 8th from 6-8 pm. On the agenda is officer elections, 2009 budget review and updates on on-going projects. The meetings are open to the public. Public comment is always one of the first agenda items.

***There is a vacant seat that the board will be filling by appointment. The only requisite is that you are a PBIA rate-payer.***

In 2009 Olympia is commemorating the 150th anniversary of its official incorporation. Come learn more about the city's fascinating history! Roger Easton, expert local historian, will use a combination of historical and modern photos in this program to show both amazing changes brought on by time and features that have remained basically unchanged in Washington's Capital City. Many Olympia landmarks as well as lesser known structures will be featured. In addition, Roger Easton will tell some of the people stories associated with the changing local streetscape. It will be a presentation that weaves past and present together.

This public program is part of the "Exploring Olympia History" lecture series at the State Capital Museum.

Suggested donation to each lecture is $2. You are welcome to bring lunch. Coffee and tea will be served.

Olympia Timberland Library Grand Reopening Extravaganza!

Please join us for the party to end all parties! Enjoy Sarah Kellington's Celtic fiddling and free caricature drawings by cartoonist Frank Frazee. Timberland Regional Library and City of Olympia officials will cut the ribbon for your remodeled library, followed with cake and refreshments. Local improv group, Heartsparkle Players, will perform interactive playback theater. Then, swing into the musical portion of the evening with swing jazz duo, Red & Ruby (Vince Brown and LaVon Hardison), followed by high-energy punk from the Shel Silverstein tribute band, the Musn’ts. The evening culminates with local singer-songwriter Kimya Dawson and the Olympia Free Choir. Sponsored by our wonderful Friends of the Olympia Timberland Library.

Creating a Housing and Community Space Use Collective in Olympia

The picture at left is of the main entrance to the Rhizome Collective's warehouse. When it began in 2000, it was a burnt out shell of a building with an asphalt parking lot in the center. Since the removal of the asphalt, it has now been changed into a lush, thriving garden. Wood mulch that was otherwise destined for the landfill has been collected for free local tree trimming businesses and spread acroos the courtyard.
