I'm certainly a neophyte when it comes to local politics, so I don't know what grudges are present, etc; however, this seems like a good excuse for some people who'd like to see downtown a little cleaner to get out and do something about it.

From today's Olympian:

Help give Olympia a cleaner downtown

Our Views

What are you doing Sept. 30? How about investing a little sweat equity to better your community?

Twice a year, before the popular Arts Walk celebrations, crews of South Sound residents grab rakes, shovels and litter sacks for "Operation Downtown Clean Up."

Work crews spend part of the day painting and picking up trash, removing unsightly graffiti, trimming trees and raking leaves. Volunteers will be rewarded with a barbecue lunch donated by Marv's Marvulus Pit BBQ and coffee courtesy of Olympia Coffee Roasting.

We encourage individuals and community organizations to join in the cleanup effort. Trash the trash and sweep the sidewalks.

Funding for the cleanup campaign is provided by the Parking Business Improvement Area (PBIA) through a tax on downtown businesses.

Volunteers gather at 8:30 a.m. at the deployment center, a vacant building at 510 Columbia St.

Friday is the deadline for volunteers to register with the Olympia Downtown Association. Call Donelle Deuel, events coordinator, at 360-357-8948.

"No special skills are needed," Deuel said, "just a willingness to donate a couple of hours sprucing up downtown Olympia."

Make the call today.

Clean Litter, then Loiter Downtown

I think it is likely I will be home working on a court report on the 30th, but if not, I hope to be there.  My suggestion would be that we clean litter, then loiter downtown to publicize our opposition to the council's consideration of loitering laws.  It's pretty easy, just stand around or wander aimlessly.  Some weary litter folks might even want to sit down on the sidewalks!!

I'll Do Sylvester Park

But I'm not signing up. We cut through it and I can pick up while we're there. We have to do something about that gazebo railing folks. The trash collects between the fence and the structure itself. An old lady like me could pull a groin muscle stepping over that fence. I almost got stuck on top of it the last time I tried! Whoa. I can't lean over things anymore either. It makes me dizzy. I tried that with Meta at Capitol Lake when we were fishing out trash with my farmer's rake. I got all dizzy leaning over the wall and too hot and got mad at myself and jumped in.

No reaching for anything for a while either. I'm still limbering up my left arm from flying down Seminary Hill behind the dog when she thought she was off leash. Now I know what fear of flying means haha. It really hurts when you land. I need to start lifting my dinky weights to fix that shoulder. I took out the biceps tendon. I can leash the dog around my waist and use my good arm.
