Local Peace Group to Host a Panel Discussion about US/Iran Relations

Olympia, WA– Wednesday, July 19th the Olympia Movement for Justice and Peace (OMJP) will be hosting a forum entitled The US Crisis with Iran. The event, which is open and free to the public, will be held at First Christian Church at 7th and Franklin in Downtown Olympia, beginning at 7 p.m. and lasting until about 9 p.m.

The panel will include a presentation by Professor Mark Jensen from Pacific Lutheran University of a historical survey of Iran, with particular emphasis on relations with the United States. Professor Char Simons of The Evergreen State College, who has recently visited Iran as a member of a delegation traveling with local peace and justice group the Fellowship of Reconciliation, will provide a testimonial of her experience along with photos from the delegation.

This will be followed by a an open discussion, facilitated by Professor Larry Mosqueda of The Evergreen State College, where the panelists will field questions and comments as well as having an open discussion among the attendees.

Iran has been identified by President Bush as a member of the "axis of evil" and as a critical battlefield in the global "war on terror." It has long been a focal point of U.S. geostrategic policy, being located in a region of vital significance to US ‘interests’ and because of vast oil reserves. Currently Iran has been receiving increased attention within policy circles, presumably due to their attempt at developing a domestic nuclear enrichment program.

As a result, OMJP feels it is crucial to engage the community about the possibility of future military assaults taken by the United States. We seek to find peaceful solutions to international affairs.

We are anticipating a productive evening of historical and political exploration, hoping to increase community awareness and knowledge about the Middle East, specifically Iran. This event is designed with the intent of providing attendees with the tools to participate in sustaining a vibrant peace movement that clearly conveys that foreign matters must be resolved peacefully and diplomatically, with attention to securing economic, social, and racial justice.

If China and Russia can't

If China and Russia can't bring North Korea in, there won't be a peaceful solution.

It's really as simple as that.

Political theory is based on the assumption that each leader and country will act in a rational manner.

Kim Jong-Il is far from a rational leader. I thought he would use the nuclear program to get food.

He probably still can use the nuclear program as leverage for assistance for his "Hermit Kingdom," but I think at this point it's unclear what it would take for Iran to slow down on their pursuit of nuclear develivery capabilities.

Weren't we talking about

Weren't we talking about Iran? Don't get me wrong N. Korea is a bit of a loose cannon but I'm pretty sure Iran was the topic.
I hate to be mean about this, but I'm going to be blunt and if it seems mean I'm really sorry. The U.N. is currently working on coming to a peaceful resolution with Iran. At the moment they don't seem terribly receptive to it. Every one of the permanent members seem to be behind making Iran accountable, this is a pretty good sign. What on Earth do you think a bunch of Olympians are going to do to change what is happening with our communication with Iran? You can bring in all the professors from Evergreen that you want it's not going to make your meeting anymore important. I understand the fight for local issues but some folks in this community have delusions of grandeur.

Norm, if we aren't talking

Norm, if we aren't talking about it, who is? And if we're not educating ourselves about it, then what can we even say? I'm sure the organizers of this particular event have no illusions about single-handedly solving the problem. Democracy happens at this level--if we don't know what we're talking about, if we have nothing but half-baked opinions about the rest of the world, if we recuse ourselves from national policy, then what is left? We are the people behind our nation's policies, and we need to start acting like it. You should be encouraging people to be involved--at least they're not tearing down fences. Yet. ^@^

NPT

The U.N. is indeed working on the issue with Iran, and could make a difference. I think there is a bigger issue here, though, than what an immediate reaction (sanctions)ought to be. So long as the Western powers (including and especially Israel) are armed with nuclear weapons, Iran is going to want to develop them for its own security.

There is a parallel issue here with N. Korea... Kim Jong Ill isn't an irrational madman, and his goal isn't to win bread for his people. He has been pretty clear that he wants a guarantee of N. Korean security from the U.S. His wild brinkmanship is the behavior of a man living under the gun.

The real issues for these "axis of evil" powers is security.  Hmmm.... that sounds familiar.  I think there is a great deal that U.S. foreign policy could accomplish to sooth the insecurity of these nations, and to prevent similar conflicts in the future.

I don't know the OMJP folks well enough to speak for them, but I'm guessing that this is a bit of what they are going to talk about at their event.  U.S. foreign policy IS something that American activists can affect, and should try to affect.

[Disclaimer for Norm: None of the above precludes or attempts to deny the existence of delusions of grandeur on the part of lefty activists.]

Evidently, the Tony Snow

Evidently, the Tony Snow video rubbed off on me.

"I am for free commerce with all nations, political connection with none, and little or no diplomatic establishment. And I am not for linking ourselves by new treaties with the quarrels of Europe, entering that field of slaughter to preserve their balance."

Wait, which Tony Snow video?

Wait, which Tony Snow video? You mean the White House press secretary? He's on video all the time. Could you provide a link?

I think Rob Richards posted

I think Rob Richards posted the thread with a video link. Basically, Snow misspoke and said "Iran" instead of "Iraq."

I can't even begin to explain what I was thinking.
