I viewed a film earlier

I viewed a film earlier tonight that documented some of the history of the teachers' movement in Mexico, and the current events taking place in Oaxaca.

The film centered on the effects of "free trade" agreements that have opened up Mexico to the interests of large multinational corporations, like Ford and Coca-Cola. Essentially, the monied interests associated with these multinationals have enabled them to access the highest reaches of the Mexican government.

Instead of a well provided for public education system that focuses on the importance of citizenship, civic engagement and important social issues - the multi-national corporations, the interests of the IMF and World Bank would prefer a public education system based on the cookie cutter paradigm, capable of churning out recruits for the sweatshops of the day...Instead of citizens, they design to create under appreciated indentured servants.

The teachers of Mexico have a long history of social organizing. Hence the current situation in Oaxaca.

It is important for us to show solidarity with these embattled teachers from Oaxaca. Check out the march!
