The military is trying to avoid demonstrators and the media by transporting Suzanne Swift from Bangor to Ft. Lewis this Wednesday morning (Jan. 3), and then releasing her from Ft. Lewis at noon.

Therefore...

...THE SUZANNE SWIFT RALLY IS MOVING TO FORT LEWIS.

Everything will occur as scheduled, but rather than meeting at Bangor Naval Base, we will meet at the ol' Exit 119 overpass (DuPont-Steilacoom), outside of Fort Lewis.

The start time is the same: 11:30 AM, Wednesday, Jan. 3

The carpool detail for Lacey is slightly different:
LACEY -- meet at 11 am at the Martin Way park & ride
OLYMPIA -- meet at 10:30 am at the Grocery Outlet (Harrison & Division) parking lot.

Welcome back Suzanne Swift!

Tell everyone you know who's planning on going to the rally!

This is the military's way to avoid having to deal with sexual assault within its ranks. They think they can evade the activists and the press. We have to let them know we're paying attention, and we're holding them accountable for the safety of the soldiers.

Suzanne Swift Support Rally
Freed from the brig at Bangor, confined in the military until 2009.
Wednesday, Jan. 3rd
11:30 am
Exit 119 overpass on I-5

Specialist Suzanne Swift, after suffering sexual assault while deployed in Iraq, went AWOL to escape the commanding officers who exploited her. Currently, she is being held at the brig at Bangor Naval Base serving 30 days for going AWOL, while her perpetrators are free. For more information visit www.suzanneswift.org.

We welcome Spc. Swift's scheduled release on Wednesday, Januray 3rd and join the call for an immediate medical discharge with full benefits. We will gather at Ground Zero near the main gates of Bangor Naval Base and then line the streets with signs supporting Spec. Swift and other women soldiers as they face double danger in the military. Please remember that our message on January 3rd is about sexual assault in the military and support of Spc. Swift, not about the war.

This event is being organized by South Sound Project for Military Resistance and Justice. Please contact us at suzanneswiftaction@yahoo.com or call (360) 485-5745.

Would've Been There

I would have been there, but I managed to mix up the times and I arrived at the Westside carpool location at 11 instead of 10:30. How was it? Any reports?

It was great to see Suzanne out of the brig

There was a good turnout, especially considering it was a workday and the location of the rally had been quickly switched due to the army's crafty machinations.  The weather was unseasonably lovely at first, and before the rally even began, we encountered Suzanne and her family in the parking lot near Starbucks.  Retired army colonel Ann Wright and many other supporters were there to welcome Suzanne, and thank her for taking such a courageous stand against sexual assault in the military.  We set up to rally in the area once occupied by Camp Suzanne.  Suzanne had to see a doctor, and change into civilian clothes before she would be allowed to speak to the press.  KOMO TV was there filming, and eager to speak to Suzanne.  As we stood on the corner holding signs and waiting for Suzanne to return from her medical appointment, the weather turned cold and threatening.  A canopy was quickly erected, and organizer Annamarie Murano and Ann Wright spoke briefly.  It actually began to HAIL, and arrangements were quickly made for supporters to meet up with Suzanne later this evening over dinner.  I believe the press also made arrangements to speak to Suzanne and her family later, but I'm not sure exactly what was worked out.  If someone sees news coverage of the rally on KOMO, please post about it.  It was great to see so much support expressed for Suzanne, and also quite thrilling to meet Ann Wright, of whom I am a great admirer.  Much thanks to Annamarie Murano for working tirelessly to arrange the press conference and rally.  Wally Cuddeford, Debi McNutt, and Molly Gibbs also worked very hard (over the New Year holiday, which definitely complicated things!) to organize these events.
