"Funny...This is considered almost holy work by farmers and ranchers. Kill off everything you can't eat. Kill off anything that eats what you eat. Kill off anything that doesn't feed what you eat."

"It is holy work, in Taker culture. The more competitors you destroy, the more humans you can bring into the world. and that makes it just about the holiest work there is. Once you exempt yourself from the law of limited competition, everything in the world except your food and the food of your food becomes an enemy to be exterminated."

..."any species that exempts itself from the rules of competition ends up destroying the community in order to support its own expansion."

[An example of this sick, normalized violence was described on Olyblog recently: http://olyblog.net/bombs-away#comments . The callous disregard for the experience of sentient creatures designated as "other," even to the point of characterizing the violence against them with frivolity and jokes, horrifies me. This is not an environment which is safe and loving. It is cruel and violent.]

good book

Let me start off by saying this is one of those books that will stay with me forever.....I agree that the way we look at farming and ranching is completely wrong. Ever since the start of Agriculture we have been trying to control our enviroment, trying to kill off all competition. We have reeked havoc on our ecosystem because of this.

Look at the issue with Bison, before cattle were INTRODUCED to North America, Bison roamed free in heards of thousands, then we slaughtered them for there horns, hides, and space. We needed to make room for cattle. Since cattle are cheaper to produce who would want to raise something that cost more. Now the fight still continues with the Bison in Yellowstone, who are tested and killed when they leave the park (every year) for a disease that can only be passed through the injestion of placenta

Thanks for the comment.

Thanks for the comment. Bison are being killed? Why are they leaving the park? Do you mean when they just wander off they're killed?

Birthing grounds

Bison migrate to the same birthing grounds every year. It just so happens that the main birthing ground is outside of the park. So the Department of Livestock, the Parks department, state, and federal law enforcement use helicopters, horses, trucks to haze them back into the park. Some of the new born calves are captured. They then go through tests then slaughter and more tests, all to determine if they have Brucellosis. All of this happens so ranchers in Montana can feel safe that their non-native cattle don't get a disease. Of course you never hear about the fact that lots of these ranches use there land for Elk hunting, and that Elk also carry Brucellosis. Of course cows don't compete with elk. Anyway you should check out this site    http://www.buffalofieldcampaign.org/    It's full of enlightening info, and good people.
