Patrick Menendez works as a support technician at ReachONE Internet. On his way home from work Monday evening February 4th, he got off the city bus and was then struck by a drunken driver in a Ford F-150 pickup truck about 8:15 pm. The driver of the pickup truck did not stop.

Fortunately, a concerned driver followed the truck to downtown Olympia -- calling the police -- where the police arrested the man and took him to St. Peter's Hospital to assess his level of drunkenness.

The incident happened at Pacific Avenue near Sawyer Street in Olympia. If you have information regarding this hit and run, you are asked to contact Olympia police at 360-753-8300.

Patrick suffered a fracture in his hip, his left leg is broken in several places and his right knee was mangled.

For more information about the incident, please see http://HelpPatrickandMary.com

I believe they caught the guy

Really though folks, when are we going to outlaw alcohol? Haven't we seen how much destruction it causes? Particularly when paired with a motor vehicle. If not an outright ban, let's at least register the stuff and require a 7 day waiting period.

All tongue-in-cheek aside, get well soon Pat.

hit and run

It was a hit-and-run. It is possible that this incident was attempted vehicular manslaughter. Serious stuff.

I mean seriously, I am glad that I am not laid up in a hospital, or worse, after getting hit by a drunk driver. This guy must have been very drunk - or else maybe he intended to hit a pedestrian? I wonder if the driver was a repeat offender.

Bad humor on my part

They did apparently catch a suspect....and he was mighty drunk

This Same Thing Happened

To Greg Skinner prior to Christmas although the diver ran from the scene and there's no way to know if he was chemically impaired or not because it took a week to find him.

As far as I know, Greg is still at Harborview from multiple broken bones and internal injuries.  Update me if somebody knows otherwise!

He and his wife teach at Hansen Elementary and have 2 teenage children.  Every day his wife goes to work and then heads to Harborview to be with him until late in the evening.  Hansen families and various other friends have cooked meals so the teenagers can have dinner at night.

It's unimaginable the destruction an impaired driver can cause on an innocent victim and their families.

These 2 men are now without a means to provide for their families and the sole brunt of everything has now fallen to the wives until their healthy again.  We as a community should band together and help these 2 families in whatever way possible!

Bubba?

I just read the update in the Olympian about the injured man's progress. The article mentioned that he had previously videotaped several dangerous intersections and posted them at www.olympiawatch.blogspot.com.

This sure sounds like our friend Bubba. I hope he's doing well. There's a website set up to help support his family during his months-long recovery: www.helppatrickandmary.com.

I debated whether or not to post this and out his identity, but it seemed to me that folks would want to know and help him out. If anyone disagrees, I'll ask for this post to be removed.
