Harlequin Stages Musical Romantic Romp: First Date

Directed by Linda Whitney

On June 22, Harlequin Productions opens First Date at the State Theater in downtown Olympia. This musical comedy was written by Austin Winsberg and includes music and lyrics by Alan Zachary and Michael Weiner. The production runs from June 22 -July 23, 2017, and tickets are available at or 360-786-0151.

When blind date newbie Aaron is set up with serial-dater Casey, a casual drink at a busy New York restaurant turns into a hilarious high-stakes dinner. As the date unfolds in real time, the couple quickly finds that they are not alone on this unpredictable evening. In a delightful and unexpected twist, Casey and Aaron’s inner critics take on a life of their own when other restaurant patrons transform into supportive best friends, manipulative exes and protective parents who sing and dance them through ice-breakers, appetizers and potential conversational land mines. Can this couple turn what could be a dating disaster into something special before the check arrives?

First Date was originally developed in Seattle in 2012 as a co-production between The 5th Avenue Theater and ACT. It was a standout success that season and moved to Broadway the following year. It has since enjoyed countless productions across the country. Harlequin's cast includes Bruce Haasl as Aaron and Christie Murphy-Oldright as the seemingly mismatched blind daters. Kyle Henick, Will Lippman, Evan Sullivan, Eleise Moore and Carolyn Willems Van Dijk make up the ensemble of characters that inhabit the psyches of Aaron and Casey. They represent the couple's various pesky and irreverent inner voices that suddenly appear to comment on and influence the proceedings of the date. These ghosts of partners past and overzealous matchmakers illuminate the charms and horrors of blind dating in the age of Facebook and Google background checks.

Henick, Lippman, Sullivan, Murphy-Oldright and Van Dijk are all new to Harlequin. Mr. Haasl was just seen in Present Laughter and Eleise Moore was featured in Recent Tragic Events in 2015. Together they bring us this raucous adult musical romance of modern sensibilities and hilarious insights.
