I've just started fishing, and I'm terrible at it. Does anybody have any personal (ie., not just read from somewhere else) experience fishing in the Olympia area that can recommend some good places around here, as well as some tips on how to catch the good stuff? My only experience fishing is off the Steilacoom Docks, and the only fish I ever catch are the trash-fish bull-head that you can only use for bait to catch more trash-fish bull-head. So... any good fishing tips? Good times to catch fish? Good bait to use? I've also got a crab pot... so any tips on crabbing (best times to do it, best bait, best locations, etc.) would be appreciated.

Lots of opportunities in our local lakes
Submitted by Guglielmo on Tue, 07/08/2008 - 10:43am.For worm-and-bobber fishing. Got a boat? You can rent one out at the Boston Harbor and try your luck out there. You'll get all kinds of advice about what to use in your crab pot. Good luck with that. There's tons of oysters for the taking out on Hood Canal too.
If you ever want to try fly fishing, let me know. That's all I do anymore. Our little Deschutes River has a nice collection of cutthroat trout. I should get off my arse and blog a local fishing piece.
ooh yeah!

Submitted by emmettoconnell on Tue, 07/08/2008 - 12:25pm.In the short-term, lakes are probably your best option, though I'd suggest a small hook with power bait, maybe a foot or so of leader and small lead. Fishing in the summer, off the bottom is probably the best idea. Lake St. Clair has some easy access if you can get out that far.
If you can wait until fall, there are a handful of options for coho and chum from shore as well.
Options indeed
