Isn't Cafe Vita doing the

Isn't Cafe Vita doing the same thing? I thought I heard that on the radio this morning.

Olympia. 20 square miles surrounded by reality.

Cosmo you beat me to it...

Cosmo you beat me to it... Damn! I was gonna update the event as well. Its all the local content I had today.

In response to the first coomment. Yeah I heard Vita was doing it as well, but this is something independent coffee houses and companies around the country are doing.

I guess a few of you should probably go to Vita we wouldn't want them to feel bad or give away all our organic espresso and organic brewed by the cup coffee off of our Clover.

I've never tried Olympia

I've never tried Olympia Roasting Company before, I'll check them out. I choose Charredbucks over B&B because of the better non-cliquey service.

Here is an article about what is happening.

I have no comment for you

I have no comment for you regarding B&B's service in the past. I've never really considered it cliquey myself but thats not saying your point or feelings isn't valid.

I would suggest you not give up on the great local coffee. There are many places downtown serving awesome coffee from local roasters, so don't feel like Charbucks is your only option. ;)

I'd be willing to come up with good list of good local indy cafes if you would like.

Java Flow

By the transit center.  They serve local coffee, and have good service.

I haven't been there since

I haven't been there since the new owners and remodeling. Ten years ago they had a back room with couches, bookshelves, Chess Boards, The owners Frank and Sam played awesome music, and they even had Open Mikes and other shows. It was the best place to hang out for someone over 18 but not 21 yet.

No more back room

But there are still comfy chairs and a couple of computers, plus a nice big table and chess.

What I really like about it, aside from being right next to the bus line is that my OC habits are actually welcomed by the owner's father.  I drink tea, and really can't comment on the coffee, but it is local and they sell a lot of it.

The also host a lot of all ages shows I have noticed.

Absolutely I'd be interested

Absolutely I'd be interested - I don't "choose" Starbucks just to make a point.

Local Roasters are good - I'm also good with any brand of coffee (including the B&B I gripe about) if the service is decent.

Thats awesome. I'd also be

Thats awesome. I'd also be interested in other folks suggestions too.

My suggestions would be:

Java Flow is an excellent suggestion, serves Oly Coffee.

Everyone knows B&B's main location on Capitol... but their store by the market is a great alternative for B&B.

Artisan's is great and serves Raven's Brew an Alaskan coffee roaster who also roasts in Oly.

Traditions Cafe a longtime favorite for locals, also serves Oly.

Not to self promo too much but our Oly Coffee cafe on 4th and Cherry where the free coffee is today is DELUXE.

Mudbay roasts their own on the Westside and is pretty great. A nice locale to hang.

Bandaloop Brothers. There are two really nice fellows who just moved into our old spot, serving our coffee on 4th and Washington. Their shop is called Bandaloop Brothers, it is brnad spankin new and they do an excellent job making our espresso.

Dancing goats inside Bayview...

Don't foget that one.  Plus they have nice tasty pumpkin bread, and the Bayview serves tasty Gyros.

MMM! Gyros!

I didn't know Bayview sold those!  I'll have to go get one!  I like Gyros!  If they're beef, not lamb!

Thanks for the info about

Thanks for the info about Ravens Brew.  I knew it was roasted here but didn't know it was served anywhere.  I've bought it in whole bean form at the Boulevard-Yelm Hwy. Chevron station and the Ruddell Rd.-Yelm Hwy. Chevron station, too.  My brother-in-law went to school w/ one of the guys who started the co., and I got started drinking the stuff while visiting my sis in Ketchikan.

The Wicked Wolf (Granny's gone, but the coffee's on) and the Three Peckered Billy Goat (Sup from the cup that keeps you up) blends are both good, and they make nice gifts for coffee lovers w/ a sense of humor.

Glad to see all of the local

Glad to see all of the local joints have this much support. Hell, who doesn't want a free cup of java anyways. It would be nice to hear how many places actually garner new business from this in the days to come.

Starbucks certainly has it's problems but...

Does Olympia Coffee Roasting offer health insurance to PART TIME employees? Starbucks does. Starbucks certainly has it's problems, but it's not the devil.

If you are an employee or stockholder,

you should disclose that now.

We could hijack this thread all night and I could tell you about Starbucks. I don't much feel like it though, but you should look into some of the efforts to organize Starbucks workers. They have been met with much very sleazy resistance.

Anyhow, let's not ruin a great thread.

EDIT: I just wanted to make it clear that I was joking with the first sentence, I apologize if it came across as serious. I need to learn to add smileys to things.

Names

In the interest of a level playing field could we call Starbucks, Starbucks?  Also, Rob, couldn't you say the same (employee or stockholder) for the other companies mentioned in this thread?  If we want to get to a point where everyone feels they are treated equally and by the same rules this has to happen.

agreed

So I'll just say, as a coffee snob, compared to the coffee roasted by our small city's specialty roasters, Starbucks coffee sucks. Heck, they couldn't even beat out McDonalds in taste tests.

Enpen, I completely agree

Enpen, I completely agree with you. B&B coffee smokes the competition. The reason why I choose to go to Starbucks sometimes is knowing that coffee will taste exactly the same every time and the service is pretty good. I've also had some issues with service in several places in town. There was a thread last week about Otto's where I had talked about one prominent coffee joint over by the Farmer's Market and why I'll never visit them again. I've had a whole mess of lattes in this town, some being very very good to "gag-a-maggot" bad.

You know it's pretty sad when "Charbucks" (sorry, I can't disprect great literature by associating the corporate "whale" with Moby Dick) coffee is worse than McDonalds (and yes, I agree, I actually drive through the McDonalds to get Iced coffee (when in a hurry or on the road only) because it does taste better than Starbucks, sorry. . .

There used to be an outside

There used to be an outside stand located across the street (and off to the side a bit) from Eastside Club. They sold a 5-shot that they called the Racehorse. I had just gotten off work and ordered one of them. I was up all night: stayed at Thekla until it closed around midnight (it was the middle of the week), went home but did not even try to go to bed, went back to work at 9:00am, worked all through my shift, got back home and without warning crashed, sleeping well into the next afternoon (good thing it was my weekend.)

About a month later I tried to recreate the experience and merely got a headache for my effort.

That Was Kundalini

the stand in front of Olympic Outfitters (the former Train Station to Old-Old-Timers) was Kundalini Espresso, run by my fellow Olympia High School Alums Jeff Bert (who now owns and operates Gravity Beer Market on 4th and Quince,) and Steve Frost.  Jeff sold his share to Steve's other partner (Brad?), and they moved into the old flower shop in between the Eastside Club and Clubside Café, but after several years in that location, lost their lease and the Clubside expanded seating from a sit-down only counter to a full restaurant with tables, into their old spot.  Good coffee, good people, sad to see them just leave instead of finding a new location. . .

Cherry Street & Vita are my "tops"

I drink espresso and like the shots at Vita & Cherry St...great taste, very exciting.

I'd encourage any espresso drinker to try it "straight" for a change (shots).

I get Americanos at Vita.

At least every other day.
