Live from Amsterdam

Open Thread for topics other than Guns and Excessive Force

Walking through Amsterdam's Schiphol airport this morning a couple of things caught my attention.

  • Obama Mania!
  • Strong Euro
  • US Economy

Barack Obama is wildly popular in Western Europe. I talked to several people about the US elections and most were supporters of Obama (for what it's worth). No official polling but the picture I took at the newsstand tells the story. Too bad I forgot my USB to mini USB adapter! The display had about 12 magazines on it, 6 on each side, and 9 of the 12 slots held different magazines with Obama on the front. No Hillary, no Edwards.

It's no secret the Euro is strong amid a weak Dollar. But, it's so bad that US based rappers like Jay-Z are glorifying the Euro instead of dead presidents. Could this mean the drug trade in the US takes on a different role? Now, I'm not flat out saying drugs are good, they are not. But, they do have a foot hold in our economy and you can't dismiss the monetary figures associated with drug trade. Will the US become an intermediate stop between South America and countries like Italy and Spain?

U.S. Banks are in trouble... no doubt. Global investors came to the rescue of Citigroup and Merrill Lynch yesterday. The deep wounds from mortgage-related investments are having a big impact on the financial sector's bottom line. $21.1 billion in capital split between the two afore mentioned financial firms.

The global markets are about to close up over here and it's not good news. Investors are giving in to recession fears.

Help, can't get this song out my head

So

EG brings us interesting news from Europe, and that is used as an excuse to infect OlyBlog with this incredibly annoying and toxic European hit. Hmm, a baby reptile that will eventually grow up to be an enormous killing machine is presented in a cute way, and it is German. Sound familiar? Rick must be very pleased. And as for you, I have to wonder what side you'll be on when the caiman day of reckoning comes to Olympia. And before you even start to think about accusing me of bringing caimans to this area, I know I must bear this heavy burden and will atone for it. But you have brought something possibly even worse-- this song! I hope you're happy.

Meanwhile, thanks EG for the post.

I think World popularity could contribute

to better foreign relations.

I think back to JFK's address in Berlin.

Oh Yeah!

While in Amsterdam (business, of course) I drove along John F. Kennedy Blvd. (Dutch equivalent) and walked in Martin Luther King, Jr. park.  Dead on Larry, dead on.

This solvent, prevalent

This solvent, prevalent worldwide, gets very little OSHA regulation despite being responsible for thousands of deaths each year, even in the United States.

I've had plenty of run-ins and accidents with Dihydrogen Monoxide myself. I've never been seriously injured but I did get a discoloration mark on a Bomber Jacket.

Schnappi again

That little hair on top of Schnappi's head reeeeally bugs me. Also, I had a dream last night that Pres. Bush sang and danced this song at a live press conference and then broke down, sobbing loudly with his head in his hands. I bet if this happened in real life his poll numbers would go up.

Sarah

Some sinister force compelled me to listen to this evil song this morning. I hope you are proud of yourself.

Very

Schnappi is victorious once again over Charlie.

Charlie

can whip Schnappi's ass with one kidney tied behind his back. Char. Char.

Now I have to go to work.
