How could OlyBlog not get the scoop on this story?

"The Friendliest Bar in Town"

King 5 is reporting that Christine Gregoire and her staff went to Hannah's last week, after volunteering at Lakefair, where the "bouncer" refused admittance to the Governor because she didn't have her I.D.

Her husband and the rest of the staff went in and Governor Gregoire went home.

What the...? Did the bouncer not know who she was? Did he think it was some kind of Liquor Control Board trick?

At least the Governor was cool and didn't get all "Cynthia McKinney" on that guy.

I was required...

To produce my Washington State ID at Hannah's during Lakefair.

When I showed the bouncer - who, judging by the article regarding Gov. Gregoire, was more than likely the same person - my military ID (proof from the federal government that I am of drinking age), he told me my military ID was "an Army issued card and only good for Army purposes."

Rather than create a scene and freak out, I just pulled out my driver's license. Sounds like Gov. Gregoire did the same thing and just gave a big whatever.

COOL!

I think it's seriously cool that the Governor can't expect to get by on "who she is" but has to play by the same rules as the rest of us. On the other hand, the idea of needing a state issued ID to drink yeast urine is a bit wacky.

The article does point out...

That you only need to card someone who a reasonable person would suspect is not 21.

The owner also acknowledges that there was a lack of common sense of the part of the bouncer.

made me smile

:)

That's bad. I was around

That's bad. I was around when an intoxicated bouncer in Pateros told an LCB agent their badge wasn't proper ID. What happened next was priceless.
»

Military ID has been an accepted form of ID...

... for just about a year. Previously, according to LCB, it was not an accepted form of ID to purchase alcohol.
»

Whatever

That shit is just funny.
»

well,

I do know, that no matter your age, you are required to have your ID on you if you're in a bar. So technically the doorperson did the right thing.

»

I do know, that no matter

I do know, that no matter your age, you are required to have your ID on you if you're in a bar.

Is this because you're in a bar or because we're all "supposed" to be carrying identification with us at all times?

»

You're damn right

The law is quite clear: to be in a bar/lounge, you must have current ID. Bartenders have suffered because of the stupid assumption that 'a reasonable person would suspect that they're not under 21.' Try telling that to the LCB when they're soaking ya for a $500 fine & six month suspension of your license. This state's liquor laws are royally fucked up & I'm glad that was made quite clear to our Governor.

From...

King 5:

The Washington State Liquor Control Board says it gets complaints all the time from people who are clearly of age but who still get carded. Spokesperson Jennifer Skoda says the state law doesn't spell out who should be carded. It just says where there may be a question of a person's right to purchase liquor, the person shall be required to present ID.

Someone pushing sixty - again, exercising common sense - doesn't fall into the category of "a question of a person's right to purchase liquor."

But let's turn to the Revised Code of Washington:

RCW 70.155.090: Age identification requirement

I would also like to highlight the section where my military identification is sufficient "Age identification."

(1) Where there may be a question of a person's right to purchase or obtain tobacco products by reason of age, the retailer or agent thereof, shall require the purchaser to present any one of the following officially issued identification that shows the purchaser's age and bears his or her signature and photograph: . . . (d) United States military identification

I can't tell you how fired up I was at the time.

Again, the RCW states "where there may be a question of a person's right to purchase". The moral of the Gov. Gregoire story, as always, is that common sense lost.

And I've noted RCW 70.155.090 states "tobacco". RCW 66.44, the section dealing with enforcement penalties for alcohol, contained nothing about proof of age and itself referred to RCW 70.155. If someone knows of the specific section dealing with proof of age to purchase alcohol (judging by the quote from the Liquor Control Board and the tobacco RCW, they're more than likely written exactly the same if there's a separate RCW), please, point us in that direction.

You still need to have your ID on you at least in a bar.

Whether you're 21 or 112.

»

Where...

Is this in the RCW? I've seen this brought up here and on The Olympian's comment section, but read this:

The Olympian: Olympia bar bounces Gregoire for no ID:

[Hannah's owner Todd Ruzicka said] "It’s not a state law that you’re required to have an ID to walk into a bar."

»

I've actually never been told it's the law.

Now think I think about it.

I know that I've always been told I have to have it. Once I got carded by a new door person and didn't have my ID, the manager happened to be there and said, "It's alright, come on in, but make you sure you have your ID in the future, you have to have it on you in the bar, just in case."

"Let us be thankful for the fools. But for them the rest of us could not succeed." You know who you are, thanks for helping me succeed.

carding

It's on the test to get your Class 12 permit, plus it was included in the training: anyone inside a bar must have proper form of ID. & Yes, Military ID is accepted. Fire Inside, you had to knuckle under to the clueless. Just like the rest of us ;-). Also, the LCB agent for the South Sound is a well-known hard-ass, more than happy to fine bartenders & bouncers for the slightest infraction. And it's not the first time the owner of Hannah's has thrown his employees under the bus....

great self control...

...I would have gone ballistic!

Our narco-control culture is lame~

They went in without her

It is interesting that the rest of the party decided to abandon the governor.

Maybe she realized that she

Maybe she realized that she has a lot of work that's not getting done and went back to her office.

Or she hurried home to catch the results of Americas Got Talent.
