Oly Hackbloc to Lead Workshop Series (Apr. 15) on security, public records, and the communications system that will be deployed at the next PMR.
Next Wednesday, April 15th, the Olympia Hackbloc (olyhackbloc.org) will be leading a workshop series on security, public records, and tapatio (the communications system which will be deployed at the next pmr).
These workshop is targeted towards activists, journalists, and members of the general public. We are looking for somebody to film these workshops or provide us with a camera (no participants will be filmed). If you are able to do this or have other questions, please contact workshops{at}olyhackbloc.org.
All participants will receive digital copies of the presentation materials. To help cover costs, participants are asked to bring $5 with them or donate whatever they feel is fair. 1. Security Workshop
Rendezvous at 'the pit' in the CAB Building (3rd floor) at 4:00. This workshop is approximately four hours long so we also turned it into a potluck. Please bring good food and refreshments for breaks!
Topics to be covered:
-What encryption is and how it works
-How to encrypt files, emails, or your entire computer
-How to 'harden' your computer (how to secure it)
-What security culture is and how to implement it
-How to protect your privacy online and in real life
-How to publish, communicate, and browse the web anonymously
-How to deal with informants, infiltrators, provocateurs, etc.
-How to work with sources and leak documents/information
If you have a computer, you are highly encouraged to bring it. Flash drives and external hard drives would also be useful. A large portion of this workshop will be hands-on computer work. If you have extra computers, extension cords, power strips, blank CDs, flash drives, or external hard drives please bring them as well.
2. Public Records Workshop
Rendezvous in 'the pit" of the CAB building (3rd floor) at 12:00 (noon). Look for Hackbloc signs.
Topics to be covered:
-What records are public record
-What are your rights? How do you appeal denials?
-What records are releasable?
-What parts of government are subject to sunshine laws?
-What is FOIA? The Open Records Act?
-How do I request public records?
Be sure to bring a pencil and paper. A computer could be handy too.
3. Tapatio Workshop and Training
Rendezvous in the CAB Building in 'the pit" which is on the 3rd floor. Meet there at 2:00.
Various intelligence indicates that during the next PMR, the coms (communications) system that was used at the RNC will be set up for Olympia.
Topics to be covered:
-What is the communications system (tapatio) and how does it work?
-How will you be able to plug into the communications system?
-How can people volunteer to operate the communications system, what does it require?
After this there will also be a training for coms system operators. This training is private.
