I'm curious
Submitted by security_six on Mon, 04/14/2008 - 5:10pm.How can you support a worker who is in this country illegally? They are not "undocumented immigrants" but rather illegal aliens who are breaking all manner of laws by being in this country.
I've worked in San Diego and had to take much lower pay because of the presence of people willing to do the same work for much less. I could barely survive at times.
Wouldn't establishing living wages for those legally here be better?

Submitted by Laurian on Mon, 04/14/2008 - 5:33pm.Undocumented workers AKA illegal aliens broke the laws of the State in pursuit of Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. So did a bunch of right thinking Colonists.
The only acts that should be illegal are theft from, violence against, or intimidation and exploitation of other human beings. Everything else is about ideology or theology.
Un-papered workers have the same deductions legal workers have taken out of their checks. They pay SSI, The IRS, L&I etc which they rarely collect on. If there were not market forces that rewarded the risks of of the underground economy there would be no illegal economy. Legalize Pot and Mexicans.
Yea I know I'm overstating my case. I do so to stir up debate.Oh crud...
Submitted by security_six on Mon, 04/14/2008 - 5:42pm.I think we could go roundy round on this one for a long time. How about over coffee when we discuss the other stuff you asked me about? Then we can have a civilized disagreement instead of one over the net :-) Otherwise it's going to become "SOMEONE is WRONG on the internet!" :-)
I should have kept my mouth shut...

why are you focusing on undocumented workers?
Submitted by Guglielmo on Mon, 04/14/2008 - 6:07pm.Umm...
Submitted by security_six on Mon, 04/14/2008 - 6:16pm.I'm not blaming them for any problems right now. Also I wouldn't walk onto a passenger jet with a handgun, so that's pointless.
What is a nation supposed to do with persons illegally in their country then? I say send 'em back. It is only the "civilized" western nations that allow themselves to get overrun with unauthorized persons."Don't try to out-weird me, three eyes. Mexico has a similar problem on their southern border.
Submitted by The Original Yoda on Mon, 04/14/2008 - 6:30pm.Keep in mind, the only reason they come here is because their agrarian way of life has been destroyed back home. Our trade policies have directly affected their situation.
The US is not their home. Their family and friends are back home. They work here to send money home with the hopes that they can, someday, return home.
You DO understand what a hypothetical question is
Submitted by Guglielmo on Mon, 04/14/2008 - 6:35pm.don't you?
If you think the economy is bad now, just wait until we "send them back." It is a very short-sighted, reactionary policy. And considering most undocumented workers are related or have strong connections with American citizens or legal residents, don't think "sending them all back" is something we can accomplish with a signature...like changing the minimum wage. You think people are just going to lay down and let it happen? Nope. Ain't gonna happen. At least not on a big scale.
ANyway, that's my last word. Back to May Day.
Can We Get A Heads Up

Mayday is not a protest
Submitted by a.future.with.n... on Mon, 04/14/2008 - 6:43pm.It's a holiday and celebration. I know thats splitting hairs to you but it's probably one of the most important days of the year to me.
It seems this is a high tension thread for whatever reason. I'm not trying to add to that, so please don't take this post as antagonism. I'm just adding a little clarity.
I love May Day

I'll never forget how Sound
Submitted by Merwyn Haskett on Tue, 04/15/2008 - 8:09am.Let's see, bongo drums at the intersection of Cooper Point and Black Lake, or children (and their families) below the poverty line getting food, education and health services - it's not a tough choice to make at all.
"Never forget?"
Submitted by Guglielmo on Tue, 04/15/2008 - 9:29am.Man, that is one traumatic, nearly delayed papers delivery!
I'll mention this once then
Submitted by Merwyn Haskett on Tue, 04/15/2008 - 9:49am.Many of these children belong to the same workers that the celebrants say they're standing in solidarity for.
The grant wasn't for me to get a raise, or for the office to get remodelled. It was for more teachers, supplies and class space so that we could accept more children into the program. This was especially important that year as we became responsible for Grays Harbor County as well.
A common misconception is that Head Start's a private school for rich kids. It's not, you have to be below the poverty line to qualify (as of 2001)
