Collection of stories, accounts, research, and queries regarding (but not limited to) sundown towns in our area. Who used to live here? If groups of people were shut out or chased out - what are those stories? What are the secret histories of our towns? What cultures and peoples make up our area? Where do we come from, what are our histories? |

What about
Submitted by security_six on Sat, 01/19/2008 - 2:34pm.The Natives? I have tried to find a good comprehensive book on South Sound natives and have failed. For that matter I would dearly love to get my hands on a book about Chief Leschi.

Work in progress
Submitted by Sarah on Sat, 01/19/2008 - 2:43pm.I just started this so don't have everything yet collected, lots more gems here on OlyBlog. I know we have some Leschi discussion too.
If anyone finds anything that we've not tucked into this yet, let me know. I'm running searches as I am able, this is an ongoing project.
The Olympia Historical Society can be a great resource, talking with reference folks at Timberland good idea too, plus we have the Washington State Library based here in Oly.
Leschi
Submitted by Sarah on Sat, 01/19/2008 - 2:51pm.Thanks Sarah
Submitted by security_six on Sat, 01/19/2008 - 7:54pm.I have seen the Leschi page. What I am really looking for is books both for myself and to send to my mother. We both have this pecuiliar idea that Leschi deserves a nice book. I have seen a couple of thin ones...
I have a lot of respect for Leschi and those who fought back. OTOH, I have a lot of respect for those like Seattle who thought it may be best for their people not to fight. Both made very hard choices and thought they were doing the best for their peoples.

Submitted by Sarah on Sat, 01/19/2008 - 8:03pm.She is an Indian Historian, researcher and writer, you might find some leads through her site Tahoma Research Service.
Also I strongly suggest you go to The Washington State Library.
I agree that Leschi deserves a nice book, even several, if one isn't out there, maybe think on researching one yourself? Seriously.
Emmett might have some ideas on this also.
The thought has crossed my mind
Submitted by security_six on Sat, 01/19/2008 - 8:07pm.But I am a little to wrapped up with work, refurbing my boat, my usual gun rights advocacies, and planning a one year trip to land I am buying in the Alaskan Bush. Maybe if I get enough info together I could write one while I am in Alaska.
