From my stately office overlooking 5th and Capitol I bear witness to this year’s “Holiday” parade. First, I must say “what a gorgeous day for a parade.” Glad I had to work today. Otherwise I would have missed it. You’d think someone like me, addicted as I am to hyperlocal news, would have known about it beforehand.

Lots of Santa hats.

The parade opened with the fantabulous Tenino Motorcycle Drill Team…in Santa hats.

Smartly-dressed Sea Scouts presented the colors.

Pets…in Santa hats.

The local bagpipers.

Old cars.

Sorry, I missed all the floats while figuring out what I was using as a denominator.

Corvettes (what’s with corvettes and parades?)

A van with cow spots, that moos, and that I assume is propelled by cow farts.

More old cars and a fire truck…and Santa hats.

A jeep towing a trailer…filled with people…in Santa hats.

Not a bad crowd for the parade. Lined up as far as my vantage point allows.

Search and rescue folks in their assorted 4x4s. And my favorite, the Music Factory Truck (reminding us of “The America we remember”)

Oh, an Intercity Transit bus…and the driver is wearing a…Santa hat.

More old cars, this time with fins.

The Search and Rescue bus. I didn’t know they had a bus.

More 4x4s.

I hear a band. It’s Capitol High and its cheer squad. I have no idea what they’re playing.

Then just like that, it’s over. Happy holidays folks…and it isn’t even December.

Thanks for the thorough description...

makes me sorry I missed it, but happy to have a description...and also to know it's there for next year. Does anyone know if this happens every year?

I did finally get the Toy Run logged in my consciousness. That happens next Saturday.

The other parade...

driving around the community looking at houses decorated

Yeah but with that, you don't get the bagpipes

:)

Speaking of those bagpipers...

here's a story. I used to have a sheltie/shepherd mix named Alpha, who lived to almost 16 years. The year 2000 Pet Parade, she was fading, so we just took her with to watch the parade. She couldn't hear or see (much) anymore, but all of a sudden she got to her feet, perked up her ears, and started trotting! It was the bagpipers....they were so loud....it was doubtless the only thing that had pierced her hearing barrier in a long time, and she was very excited about it. I also like to think that some carried-through-the-decades gene stirred feelings in her of a Scottish homeland (well, Shetland Islands), but that's just the romantic in me.

Bagpipes

A sax player and I were partners in 1999 and were hired to play a St. Patricks Day party in Gig Harbor.  The hostess of the party decided that bagpipes would be festive.

I learned that night that 5 minutes of bagpipes was about 4 minutes too much in a closed room

Bagpipes are not festive. I

Bagpipes are not festive. I don't care who you are.

Perhaps

their music would've been more festive if the players were wearing Santa hats like everyone else.

While we're on the subject of hats

As a newcomer just getting a feel for the area, I have to tell you that virtually every day I get the "hat report" from my husband who works downtown. So far he's spotted:

A three-cornered hat
A bowler
A Russian Cossack-type hat
A Greek fisherman's hat

I'm quite sure that there are more out there...
»

Only one Russian Cossack type hat?

I thought everyone was wearing those. My head feels absolutely naked walking around downtown without one. BTW, what does a Greek fisherman's hat look like, anyway?

Peace became pizza. -- Guglielmo

Here is your Greek Fisherman's Hat

Yes, Olympia is a town of many hats

A Rasta tam

A fedora (guilty)

A pork pie

A pakol ...

»

Lovely picture. You made me have to look up

pakol, though it's nice to have a new word today.

Janet, for some reason I've long since forgotten, I have TWO Greek fisherman's hats in my car if you want to try one on the next time I see you. They wouldn't cover your ears, though, this time of year (any time of year....that wasn't a statement about your ears this time of year). They are way more cute on girls than on boys, at least judging from the reception I get, but of course I'm cute anyway.

And then there are asshats
