Hello, I'm here specifically to distribute and request info for the purposes of opposing condo 'development' and gentrification in Olympia. we're one of the last cities of our type in the US and the last thing we need is to become another indistinguishable monoculture smear on the I-5, another bedroom community for white-flight refugees from Seattle or Portland or California. Please, please, please help your neighbors oppose the gentrification of Olympia. I love it here and i don't WANT to seee Oly become Bremerton, no matter what Matt Belcherdorf says.

So- stay tuned. I'll be posting weekly with whatever information i have about the battle against condo development. This will include dates, places and times to act, PDFs to download and whatever else i can bring you. For starters, i want the community at large to remember the date JUNE 24th. This is the date the City council will hold a town-hall style meeting to provide the public the opportunity to voice thier opposition to condo development. They haven't published a time or location for this event, but as soon as i know, you will.

thanks for your ear and it's a pleasure to finally join the conversation i've had so much fun reading over others' shoulders.

other public meetings re: development

If folks are interested in the council's larger "vision" for downtown Oly, consider attending these other meetings of the City Council's Land Use & Environment Committee:

  • May 29 at 5 pm = topic = "downtown master planning efforts--Future of 4th Ave Vision" (warning, this meetingmay actually be on May 19th, since the 2 planning calendars have conflicting dates)
  • June 30 at 5 pm = topic = "Key Barriers to Development"

To find out more, go here: http://www.ci.olympia.wa.us/citygovernment/council/agenda/ and click on the Committee Calendar (pdf) Quick Link.

Welcome!

Glad you are here.

I encourage everyone to

I encourage everyone to visit the O's comment section for the Tri Vo article today. I was expecting a barrage of "Anything we do to downtown will improve it" comments, and was pleasantly surprised to find a wide range of relatively well-written opinions on the subject. I'm glad so many people are engaging in this conversation, because it's such an important one for our future as a city.

Olympian comments

Wow, you're right Meta - I don't think I've ever made it through the whole of an Olympian comments section before and been so encouraged. It appears that, even if Olympians don't agree on a lot of other issues, the idea of importing "better" residents and filling the bank accounts of rich developers is one thing we're all against.

I am not against bringing new residents

to downtown Olympia. I honestly think that would be a good thing. Not sure about the "better" part. Just other people I suppose. I don't there is anything close to consensus on that.

so you're saying that...

we should just develop the outlying wooded and rural areas and build giant McMansions out there for rich people to live in. Why am i even asking, of course that's what you're saying, you love McMansions and you hate trees, and you're against affordable and un-affordable urban housing and you hate jesus and you're against breakfast. I live in two shoe-boxes taped together.

New group focusing on stopping unsustainable development

Hey y'all, there's a new group in town named Olympia Rising Tide. This group has chosen three areas to focus on, one of those being "development". If you're interested in getting on our listserv or being involved in this group, email me at maya@riseup.net
