An unusual item crossed my desk today. It was map from 1934 published by Lee R. Double. In color, it was printed on the same kind of paper used for brown shopping bags.

The map was entitled: Hysterical Map of Olympic Peninsula and Puget Sound Country : a Trifle Cockeyed / hatched & etched by Jolly Lindgren.

It was really more of a cartoon than a map. Lindgren apparently drew several of these for different parts of the country.

Here are some of the incredibly corny puns and jokes I found on this map associated with certain cities and geographic features:

Neah Bay: "Neah the Ocean."

[woods]: "Fuller Brush."

La Push: "French for 'The Boss'."

Moclips: "Mo-clams"

Bay City: "Just for the Smell of it."

10-9-0 [Tenino]: "Wooden Money."

Centralia/Chehalis: "Pals."

Olympia: "A Right Capital City."

Deschutes River: "Lousy wit 'Des Fish'."

Puyallup: "Hoppy Days Are Here Again."

Mt. Rainier: "Mount Rain-Oma, to stop that eternal bickering."

Gig Harbor: "Not a gag."

Stillaguamish: "Still a Fishin'."

Queets: "He got the Limit in 10 Minutes and Called it Queets."

Later, Olympia-born Willard R. Espy perfected the art of Washington State geographic puns in his 1993 book, Omak Me Yours Tonight, or, Ilwaco million miles for one of your smiles: A Ballard of Washington State.

To this day

Whenever I see that sign on I-5 that says "Gravelly Lake-Ponders," I think of a body of water having deep thoughts. I can only just begin to fathom what that means. I can only hope I can keep current with the tides of change and wave goodbye to the past.
