Nobody is being civil, everybody is on the attack. There is NO POINT in just hosting another version of the Olympian comments here. It's not just one person, or two people, everybody is feeding it. It sucks here.

I don't think that will

I don't think that will help.  This seems to happen in cycles...every one is calm and civil, then it starts to get ugly, then uglier and then climaxes in some sort of huge rucus and then everyone says "okay let's take a break", people break, come back, repeat.  I feel like a lot of stuff that other people post here (including my own!) gets overlooked because everyone enjoys the argument threads more.

Absolutely agreed

I almost feel like there needs to be lots of "less controversial" material brought on board. Drown out the controversial threads. I think if there was less resistance to certain subjects that certain threads would simply fizzle out of existence. If someone feels strongly about a subject though, and feels pushed into a corner......

That's exactly the criticism I heard yesterday.

From someone (another person) who quit posting here because of the atmosphere. The big reason she quit was the patriarchy, then because it's not seen as a good place to announce event because content gets shoved down so fast, or ignored, by other, non-local issues.

I used to frequent another

I used to frequent another local website which had an option for what would automatically show up on your screen if you were logged in. i.e. Someone, after logging in, would see Everything, or Front Page, or Diaries (blogs), or Events, etc.

As for the "Patriarchy" issue, there are plenty of things we men can do to help make things better, but unfortunately there will always be some people who feel threatened by the active presence of men in general.

Now take a little while to find your way in here
Now take a little while to make your story clear.

Here's my contribution.

I'll refrain from commenting with direction to, or on threads posted by those whose intention on Olyblog is strictly to disrupt and anger.  That way I won't encourage them and I won't be guilty of similar verbage.

I think this "Let's tone it down a bit folks" reminder

might just do the trick. The level of acrimony is definately spiking here. I'll take myself down a notch or two and just ignore those who don't. Sorry for my part folks.

words, words, words

Seeking thine council in wisdom thus broken...softly, what find we here? Why, 'tis self-governance. Wisdom from within.

make stuff

Produce, produce, produce. There's this really cool free service I heard about. Basically it's a pre-built clearing house for people interested in Olympia, WA. You can show videos, pictures or just ramble on about fish, and somebody with similar local leanings is probably going to see what you're offering. And it's free. And the more people add to it the more people learn to work together, even if they're working on seemingly diametrical projects.

Comments are valuable. They can help us all see a different perspective. But they also require time that could otherwise be given to creating content. The problem, I think, is living in the comments. I think my fellow Olympians know and experience some pretty cool things that I don't. It would be nice if we could all share.

Edit: Grammar for.

I have an idea!

And, it won't require shutting down comments or requiring people to post only hyperlocal content (although that would be my dream as benovolent dictator).

But, I say we bring back the forums! The forums, where did they go? you might ask. Well, no where, they're still right here. But as a type of content, they've been ignored.

Instead of allowing anyone to post a blog, if you aren't a regular poster of hyperlocal content, we can let folks post in the forums.

Here are two hyperlocal site (Tacoma and Dupont) that effectivly use forums as a way for anyone to submit content, but not allow it to overwhelm the rest of the site.

I'd even suggest installing a new forum software on the site to clearly seperate Olyblog the blog and Olyblog the forum.

So, we could go through regular cycles of high activity and low activity in the forums, while leaving the front page and its associated content in peace. We'd still have comment up there too.

I love it

I think this is worth a try. Comments not in the forums could be only about the article, such as clarifying questions about events, and then the forums could be all of the back and forth, still holding to the social contract.

I absolutely block doing nothing.

With all due respect to your service

Wouldn't it demand less of the docents to simply have them intervene when things start getting out of hand? They were a virtual "no show" in this go 'round. It seems to me that pulling a conflict-seeking comment and asking for an edit seems less intrusive and time consumng than culling all comments that fail to meet some standard of relevance.

You assume that the docents are looking for less demand.

I'd be happy to spend more time working on the blog if it entailed more journalism and less babysitting.

That was my idea awhile ago...

I suggested that only local events/news should be posted, not State/National politics. Those posts, and the posters who post them, easily start the fights they are looking for. Crack down on content that isn't local or will just start the same fights that have been going on for months or years. Everyone just makes the same points over and over anyway.
»

Point taken

Perhaps the docents should pilot that idea on a few random threads to see how culling irrelevant comments works for you and everyone else.

It would be nice to see more

It would be nice to see more posts about the history of Olympia and the surrounding area. I have been meaning to add another bit to my Olympia Brewery topic from a long time ago. Let's concentrate on more local events. Let's steer clear of those that start fights though. Although a local event, we have heard enough about the Port protests. It keeps getting brought up, the same arguements are thrown back and forth and threads like that are the main reason I walked away from Olyblog for so long. It is both mentally and spiritually exhausting to see the same topics beaten to death.
