Personally I would get rid of the Port of Olympia. They are a pimple on the buttocks of local government. The marine terminal is a joke and they have no business operating a marina in direct competition with local firms...

I wonder what the tipping point is, population wise. When I left Seattle I couldn't go two days without running into somebody I knew from Elementary, Middle or High School. And when I first came back from Minneapolis I immediately ran into somebody I knew at SeaTac.

Submitted by enpen on Sat, 03/29/2008 - 10:47am.For the last few days, and completely unbidden, I've been almost obsessively wondering why Olympia doesn't have a minor league baseball team.
Does anyone know if Oly has ever had one? Or if there's ever been an effort to bring one here? I know both Portland and Tacoma have their own, but Portland is probably the next city in line to get a pro team in any future U.S. expansion. There could even be a section for State Senators and Representatives...an atmosphere of intrigue and stogies.

ooooh!!! ooooh! ooooh!!!!!! (hand waving in the air)
Submitted by emmettoconnell on Sat, 03/29/2008 - 2:02pm.Olympia did at one point have a minor league baseball team, it was a 'D' level team that played in the early 1900s along with Aberdeen, Shelton, Chehalis, Centralia, etc... 'D' level was abolished when the minors were brought under stricter control by Organized Baseball in the 1950s (shakes fist at Organized Baseball).
Olympia (or rather the metro area) will be again home to semi-pro ball the summer of 2009 when an entry in the West Coast Collegiate League begins play out at the Lacey Athletic Center. They had sought a home in Oly, but Lacey proved to be more hospitable.
Damn it!

The idea of a ball park with the water just beyond LEFT field, the Olympics out of center, is awesome. Maybe we could talk Nick Lachey and his partners into a relocation!
It would be an awsome location!

Submitted by enpen on Sat, 03/29/2008 - 9:27pm.I like that dream, aside from the Lachey. I want a minor league baseball team in Olympia. Maybe when Portland gets a MLB team...we should start lobbying.

Owner Suggestions?
Submitted by Ehver Green on Sat, 03/29/2008 - 9:51pm.I like him as an owner. I don't care for his celebrity status but I do like his youth and sports xperience. I also like that he's just part (1/3?) of a larger business group. Venture Bank just signed up for five more years. Season ticket numbers are up.
It is going to take money. Community ownership would be sweet but I just don't see it happening. A or AA would need less to operate but I'm not really sure how much less.
I have no idea
Submitted by enpen on Sat, 03/29/2008 - 10:07pm.I'm too new to Oly to know where the money is around here. AAA is shooting for the stars. I'd take short season or full season A ball. AA is about where all of the high level pitching prospects stop these days before jumping to the majors. Damn...before I was just thinking about how sweet it would be to walk down and catch some minor league baseball...now you have me thinking about that damn view. Tourist attraction...stop off at the Farmer's market to pick up your fresh produce and head on over to the game! There could even be a ballpark cafe that specialized in food made from local farms...

Why not Indy ball?
Submitted by emmettoconnell on Sun, 03/30/2008 - 6:26am.Why go the OG route? (shakes fist at OG again). Indy ball has become more and more established since the early 90s. The only problem is there is no NW circuit, but the Golden league did add two Canadian teams, maybe they're looking for some teams in between Canada and California.
The limiting factor we're ignoring is building a minor league stadium in Olympia. Unless you know someone who has $30 million or so laying around, we're talking about some level of public funding. And, you thought building a conference center in Olympia was hard.
I only get one thing??
Submitted by JT on Sat, 03/29/2008 - 10:46am.Dang, the list is long. But if only one thing it would be the weather. This part of the country has some of the worst weather if you like to do things outdoors.

Ah c'mon...
Submitted by security_six on Sat, 03/29/2008 - 11:48pm.That's what rubber grips and composite stocks are for! I've got a pair of mittens with a trigger finger in them somewhere too!
And full canvas on boat cockpits!
Let's face it, it takes a special breed of madman to do outdoor stuff up here. Hikers, boaters, hunters and fishing folk from the Puget Sound are widely respected elsewhere!
Yeah, the weather really sucks. Sometimes I miss the weather I enjoyed in San Diego for two years... not much else though.
And I want to go to Alaska? Call the men with straightjackets and get the rubber room ready!
