Josh Ploeg Cooking Demo and Zine ReadingsJoshua Ploeg, traveling vegan chef, demonstrated and shared with a standing-room-only audience delicious and easy vegan dishes such as Apple-Lemongrass-Shitake Rolls and Seaweed-Noodle Salad Rolls. Josh shared humorous anecdotes of his experiences traveling and cooking in other's kitchens.

Several talented community members also shared readings from their zines, catalogued at the Olympia Timberland Library. We heard about novice cooking tips, candy aisle ratings of Tumwater stores, and codes of conduct, pirate and otherwise.

Visit Joshua Ploeg's blog or his website for more information. You can buy Joshua's cookbooks and zines at Buy Olympia or Microcosm.

Can anyone out there provide information on this place? It was on Hunter's Point, apparently facing the Eld Inlet side. I'm told it had a somewhat nefarious history.

Come check out the KICK ASS dance party I'm throwing in Oly to help benefit KOWA 106.5 low-power community radio!!

It is called Oly Equinox 2008!!

It will be in the basement of the Eagles Hall in Oly on September 20th!!! We will be celebrating the return of darkness as the days become shorter and the darkness takes over!!

DJ Seth Myles of San Diego (he is a superstar in the southwest) will be headlining the event. Also appearing will be KOWA's own Fallout Sessions crew also known as Opposing Nature. There may also be a special appearance by Aktion T4 (an industrial techno band).

There will be 2 kegs of Pabst Blue Ribbon ($5 all you can drink!) and a cover charge of 3 bucks. Try spending that much at a bar!

So come dance your ass off and help support your local community radio, KOWA 106.5 low-power fm and Media Island International!

While working on another project, I ran across this editorial from the Jan. 27, 1911 Leavenworth Echo. Interesting that the issue of the geographic location for the Washington State's seat of government was still an issue at that late date to some. Remember that in 1911 the actual Capitol Building was the structure next to Sylvester Park that now serves as SPI HQ:

"The Echo has never had anything to say about capital removal, for the reason there is little likelihood the present legislature would give serious consideration to a bill contemplating removal. That the state capital is in the wrong place will hardly be denied by anyone outside of Olympia. It is not only inaccessible, but altogether too far removed from the center of the state. If its location was left to The Echo it would be removed at once to Wenatchee: because it is not only a splendid site, but also practically the geographical center, and at present more accessible than Olympia; and when a road is built up the valley of the Columbia, as one surely will be in a short time, it could be reached from any part of the state easily and at much less cost than the entire population east of the mountains can reach the present capital. The present legislature will not, however, consdier removal, and there is no profit in discussing an issue that lacks life."

From decorabilia:

The Cougars, powered by Riley Wall's quick feet and an experienced O-line's excellent blocking, were able to keep pressure on the Fighting Irish's bigger, faster squad. O'Dea appeared unfocused and undisciplined; I lost count at 10 penalties, including successive illegal man downfield calls. The only thing that kept O'Dea from blowing it was a lack of turnovers.

The Cougars led 13-7 with 1:29 left in the 3rd quarter, but couldn't keep the Irish from striking back quickly, edging ahead on a long touchdown pass when a Cougar defender fell down. Capital's attempt to come back was stuffed, but the defense held O'Dea in check, handing the offense the ball with just over 3:00 left in the 4th.

Almost every week this is the "What's on the city council's plate this week" review. I don't cover everything, so if you want the full rundown, read the packet and agenda yourself.

EDIT: Just called down there, the exact dates of the closure are October 6 until December 14. Can't wait until after the remodel, should be cool.

From the staff report discussing the city spending $60,000 on a carpet replacement at the library (which the library district will repay):

...the City and Timberland Regional Library have several projects already planned for the library building, including carpet replacement, installation of a new information desk and a new circulation desk, the addition of a new sit-down desk for people receiving library cards, new seating and tables in the atrium below the skylights, cleaning of public computer workstations and removal of an underground storage tank, in which the facility will be closed to the public for up to two months.

I've heard a bit about this closure before (not sure about the dates), but apparently, you'll still be able to pick up and drop off books, but the library itself (shelves and all) will be shut down for awhile.

The following two movies will be playing this week at OFS:

The Last Mistress (Sept. 5-12):

From OFS: "Erotically provacative director Catherine Breillat’s bodice ripper/literary adaptation stars the mesmerizingly feral force of nature, Asia Argento. An impoverished mid-19th century aristocrat relates the scandalous history of his decade-long affair with the notorious La Vellini to the family of his wealthy intended. Acclaimed by critics across the country, it’s a must-see!"

WALL-E (Sept. 5-12):

From OFS: "It is 700 years into the future and the only inhabitant left on Earth is WALL*E, a solar powered, trash compacting robot. He spends his days squishing the last remnants of life into dense cubes. And then one day a ship appears, which contains a sleek, blue-eyed robot called Eve, and our robot hero is immediately smitten. A love story for the ages, WALL*E is also a stirring sci-fi tale that will enchant all humans."
