My webpage that is. I'm working on getting content up for it. Give me a little time, especially as I work with the new development tools. If you have something really interesting to say, I will be putting up a "guest blog" section as well. Edit: "Vermin of the Week" is up as well.

Submitted by security_six on Mon, 04/14/2008 - 12:26pm.It's a joke from Futurama. Morbo the newscaster finished a report with "....and that's why the third-graders at P.S. 139 are Morbo's Vermin of the Week."
I thought it was funny and a good way for me to showcase what I disaprove of. I am rather pissed off to be lumped with Nazi's in that regard. I consider Obama and Hillary a threat to the well being of this nation, and think they should be eliminated from politics through politcal means. And that is why they are my Vermin of the Week.
On the other hand, this much criticism means people are looking at and reading my page. :-) Thanks for looking guys!
I may tone down the final statement, but Vermin of the Week stays up. (Until Fox decides they don't like me using a line from one of their shows)

Submitted by security_six on Mon, 04/14/2008 - 1:10pm.I don't wear one everyday, and I had just knocked back a couple of brews AND was trying to deal with a stressful day at work. My anger came out there in a safe fashion.
Plus you misunderstand what I mean when I say "I hope I don't have to kill someone" I'm saying that I hope a situation does not arise where I would have to use my weapon to defend myself. Not that I'm looking for or hoping for that situation, but on the odd chance it arises that I can get out of it without pulling the trigger.
Some people understand what I am saying there, but they are also people who wear weapons for work or protection. Very few people actually want to use their weapons except on the range or hunting. Ever. And we hope that nothing will arise that will require us to use those tools. Be we also hope for the strenght of will and character to do so, as failing to do so will result in a greater harm to ourselves or an innocent third party.
It's difficult to explain to someone who does not carry a gun.
I never want to have to be in the situation where I must draw and fire my weapon in self defense or to stop a violent crime. But I would want even less to be in a situation where I needed my weapon and I didn't have it.
The taking of a human life is something I could happily live the rest of my life without ever doing. But I will choose my own life or the life of an innocent third party over the life of a person trying to commit a deadly violent act.
That is what I hope to never have to do.
It would weigh on my mind more heavily to see another person die or be seriously harmed through my inaction or inability to act or for me to face the same risks (if I get killed, nothing is going to weigh heavily on my mind, although sitting in a wheelchair paralyzed will cause me to second guess my actions for the rest of my life)
Does this make sense? I want to never face the situation where I must use my weapon, but I wish to be prepared should such a situation occur. We never know what the day will bring, we can assess risks and likelyhoods of events, and take precautions to avoid suspicious circumstances, but people still get stabbed, attacked raped, and have their homes invaded. Criminals still rob banks while we are cashing our checks, or try to knock over a grocery store while we are getting a our dinner and a movie.
I'm sorry if I have scared you, and I will tone down what I wrote on the page. It's easy to be harsh and bitter over the net. That's what feedback is for, to let the author know when they have gone too far for their audience.

Submitted by Laurian on Mon, 04/14/2008 - 4:11pm.Even though I don't wear a gun I understand why you do and think your reasons are sound and your intentions honorable. Honestly; I feel a bit more secure knowing your armed. But I don't want to turn this into a gun thread.
I understand the problems people have with Vermin of the Day. I know you are not a sympathizer of Nazi ideology. (Repeat after me: I am not now, nor have ever been a member of...but I digress.)
That said, there is a history of repressive states dehumanizing enemies and other undesirables as vermin and/or disease vectors in the process of oppressing dissent, and in the extreme, ends in genocide. Since your writings make it clear you are one of the last people on the Earth to favor a repressive police state, why use the language of said state? Like I wrote to Rob R., language matters. Sloppy or inflamatory language leads to mis-understandings, unintended insult, and needless arguments.
May I suggest some alternative titles:
- Poopheads of the Week.
- This Week's Vogon Tool.
I like the second a lot but it might result in D. Adam's estate suing you.Hey! How about a contest. The best suggestion for an alternate title to V. of the Week gets a guest column. Or a beer. Or a voucher for an hour on a firing range. Or one of those damn bottles you tried to pawn off on some poor fool.
Anyway, congrats on the web site. I will be a regular reader.
Thanks for the feedback

Think I am going to stick with Vermin of the Week, I toned down some of my disaproving language and will try and be a little more light hearted there. Sadly only Futurama Fans will get the the joke, so I will have to explain that a bit on my blog. I appreciate people reading it, also I appreciate another Hitchhiker's fan...
I'm not out to dehumaize anyone. Politicians have a long history of being equated with all manner of noxious creatures. I'm far from the first to call them Vermin or to equate them with an undesirable species. I believe Mark Twain called them "Congress critters"
But I digress. I'm going to explain the vermin of the week joke and see how feedback goes.

Submitted by Guglielmo on Mon, 04/14/2008 - 8:30pm.He's a big boy (no shit). He can handle the criticism and judge its merits just fine I bet. The urge to circle the wagons is quite strong, I know, but there's really no need..."a point of view is only a view from a point" afterall.
I find if quite disturbing when one human being refers to other as "vermin." It would be a sin if I didn't say so. That said, S6 is free to do what he wishes.

"Germans who wish to use firearms should join the SS or the SA. Ordinary citizens don't need guns, as their having guns doesn't serve the State." - Heinrich Himmler 1936You've got a Himmler quote as your sig line.
Submitted by Rob Richards on Wed, 04/16/2008 - 6:12pm.You have a caustic sense of humor Steve. Many people won't like it. You also use sarcasm, which doesn't go over on the internet. Many people won't understand it. Given those two things, it's pretty likely that people are going to accuse you of things that you're not. If you don't care, that's one thing. If you do, then maybe thinking about how what you write is going to be taken by people with different perspectives would be a good thing for you.
Ugh.
Submitted by security_six on Wed, 04/16/2008 - 6:22pm.Yes I have a himmler quote. Read it very carefully. Now equate that with what I believe about the right to bear arms. Now consider what Himmler is saying. Now equate that with what I believe about the right to bear arms. Now read VERY carefully what himmler is saying... Get the point?
I am equating those who would deny ordinary citizens the posession of arms with totalitarian regimes. Not too hard really.
I found that line on a gun forum, where the OP had coupled with with a quote from General Clark.. "If you want assault rifles, join the army. We have lots of them." - General Wesley Clark 2004
I personally was unsure of the context of General Clark's quote so I didn't include it.
One reason I decided to accept my friend's offer of building the website was so I could say what I wanted about anything and not have to justify my statements. I honestly didn't expect the shitstorm over four little words, ESPECIALLY after I carefully explained their context. Anywhere else but OB I've gotten good feedback on that, and a few laughs.
One person told me the British have it right, that nobody is above being made fun of.
Sometimes I think people get so touchy feely sensitive they start losing perspective. I know I picked on the two golden children of the left, but for the love of all that is freaking unholy, it's a joke from a cult classic TV show!
Now pretend I had labeled Bush and Cheney as vermin of the week? I'll be dollars to donuts that I would have gotten a lot of "LOL" and "right on" I was tempted, but those two vermin are on the way out, and Hillary and Obama may be on their way in, and they scare me as much as Bush and Cheney. But I digress.
I guess I need to find another sig line that is less subtle and doesn't require a moment or two of thought either.

Submitted by security_six on Wed, 04/16/2008 - 6:40pm.I should have never used a sig line that requires more than a brief flash of mental clarity... This one should play well in Peoria. Or Olympia.

It is "Steve's Blog" but I do have a dedicated space for "guest blog of the week" So far I have been underwhelmed with responses to my requests for someone to make a guest statement and link back to their website.
Comments will not be edited except for language (I'm trying to keep a PG feel) otherwise anything goes
I'm trying to make a broader statement than is appropriate for me on Olyblog. I'm still sticking around but will put a lot of stuff I wouldn't have posted on my page, and will add local content there in a fashion that may not have worked on OB. It's still a work in progress. I want readers, and I want people to reply, and I see some Olbloggers have already wandered over and registered to comment, which I appreciate. It's one more facet of news/opinion dissemination in Oly.
Again, I welcome guest bloggers. I don't care about your politics, but rather a well written statement. Oh I probably won't put up an anti gun statement, but won't stop the antis from commenting though. Comments to material are open for all opinions but content goes through me.

Apparently, it was a futurama joke mixed with some political satire. I'm sure security_six does not hold a grudge against me and he changed a bit of his original wording.
