There's an important discussion happening over on Emmett's blog Olympia Time about City Council candidate Karen Veldheer. Here, and then here.
»

Actually

there are three comments, two questioning Mr. Richard's spin and the third from Rob digging himself in further. Here is what the kefuffle is about

Karen Veldheer wrote in reply to Mr. Richards:

I believe in the separation of Church and State, and that city ordinances must be supported by elected leaders.   I support the City of Olympia’s equal benefits policy.  Regarding civil rights for minorities, including GLBT, the State of Washington has over 200  specific rights including many of the rights most important to GLBT which I support as well.

Seems pretty clear to me. Apparently not so for Rob. He goes on in his blog and comments on Emmett's Olympia Time to cast aspersions about her personal values with a series of speculations about her church, its teaching, and her position on gay rights like he's a liberal Matt Drudge. Why Rob wants to paint Karen Veldeer as a Fundamentalist Christian just waiting to take away Domestic Partner benefits escapes me.

I have gotten to know Karen over the past year through our work together on the Steering Committee of the Olympia Coalition of Neighborhood Associations (OCNA). She has been instrumental is organizing a series of information sharing meeting between community activists and the leadership of Olympia's Neighborhood Associations leadership. She led the struggle against Tri Vo over his botched Cooper's Crest development and recently worked with State Rep Brendan Williams to pass home owner's warranty legislation. Karen may not be the most polished candidate Olympia has ever seen but she does have the kind of coalition and consensus building skill set our city council needs in light of its recent history.

This weak and hopefully un-intentional character assassination from Joe Hyer's campaign manager is the same kind of divisive, personality driven politics that has torn this city apart. It must stop here and now. In the best of all possible worlds Rob would offer Karen an apology.

Laurian

I believe in equality. It is something that I choose to stand up for. Upon hearing about the values of Veldheer's church, I sent her an email asking for an explanation. I was not satisfied by the response. It lacked depth and so I asked some clarifying questions which I've yet to get a response to. I don't have any desire to drag anybody through the mud, but like I've said, I simply cannot support a candidate if they don't believe in the humanity of LGBT individuals, or if they willingly belong to organizations that feel the same without speaking out against those values.

I understand that she has done some positive things for her neighborhood, and that's great, but that doesn't change the values of the church she attends, and doesn't mean that she should she shouldn't be fully vetted before the election.

Rob

keep right on digging. In addition to making stuff up, you are making a mountain out of a mole hill. Domestic partnership benefits in Olympia are not at risk.

To risk being redundent but Karen answered your question: she supports domestic benefits, and not in some abstract fashion, but as enumerated by the City. Pretty damn concrete boyo. Again, why are you beating this dead horse.

What is the difference between being fully vetted and demanding one's private life be dissected in public by some self important blogger? If you feel she does not show the proper zeal on an issue near and dear to you, then don't vote for her, but to launch a rant based on what Karen did not, or has yet to say, is bullshit, the equivalent of asking 'when did you stop beating your wife.'

How nauseating

to be criticized for taking part in the process.

A candidate for public office may or may not have values that I fundamentally disagree with and I'm talking about it. What exactly is bullshit about that, Laurian?

This is not about what side she butters her bread on, this about whether she agrees with the homophobia of her church, to which she has not responded. What do I take her silence to mean? I would think that it would very easy to write a statement that says, "I disagree with those teachings of my church and work within my capabilities to address them. I believe LGBT individuals deserve the same rights and protections as anyone else." She has yet to do that. She stated that she supported the ordinance because the ordinance is law, she never clearly said that she would vote for it, or that she agreed with it. Your oversimplification of her words is misleading people at the same time you accuse me of being Rovian (how Rovian!).

I think the best thing is for anyone who cares about this issue to send Karen Veldheer an email asking her to clarify her personal values around homosexuality in general, and equal benefits specifically.

Mrs. Veldheer can be reached at: karen@karenveldheer.com

The bullshit part Rob

is you have turned Karen Veldeer's unequivocal statement "I support the City of Olympia’s equal benefits policy" into an allegation that she is a homophobe. I didn't think of it, but Rovian is a very good description of what you are doing.
»

Right.

Bush was Hitler, Obama is Mao, and I'm Rove.

I never, not once, called her a homophobe. I pointed out that she attends a homophobic church, and I asked for clarification.

»

Also,

as a Veldheer supporter, perhaps you could clear this all up by asking her where she is on these issues. Does she agree with her church or not? That's all I'm wanting to know.

This came up a while ago

When the Citizens for a Responsive Local Government were considering Karen's candidacy (by the way, she did eventually receive the CRLG's endorsement), we were aware of Karen's religious affiliation, and speculated about whether it would impact policy decisions at the city. So I called her up and asked her about it. She told me that it wouldn't be an issue, that she had no objection to same sex partner benefits. She and I had quite an interesting discussion about faith, and tolerance. Karen strikes me as an honest and genuine person. I trust her. I'm surprised that this is even an issue. Are we afraid that every Catholic politician is going to do his or her best to ban birth control? Are we afraid that Jewish politicians will insist that everyone have a bris? I just don't see any red flags here.
»

Thank you.

I've been waiting for SOMEONE to just say that.

This is an issue that rests at the core of my being and I needed clarification. I hope that eventually Karen releases a statement saying the same thing, but I'm glad to hear this came up and she responded this way.

This wasn't a witch hunt, this is an issue that I care deeply about, it's THE civil rights issue of our time, and I just needed to get to the bottom of it. I don't feel like I should be interrogated or have to defend myself for that.

I'm really surprised at the ease in which people dismiss her involvement with a church that has homophobic values. If I ran for office and at the same time was involved with a group with racist values, I'd be called out on it, asked to explain myself, and still probably lose, and that's appropriate. What's the difference between racism and homophobia? Why is homophobia so easy to forgive?

»

I care about this issue a lot, too

I am very supportive of marriage equality, to the extent that I will not shop at a couple of locally owned, conveniently-located grocery stores that support the anti-gay rights lobbying efforts of people like Bob Higley. (More information available here, towards the end of the article.) But Karen is not pursuing an anti-gay agenda, the way Higley is. I feel very comfortable supporting her candidacy.

Thanks for the info.

I hadn't heard this before. Daniel's House of Prayer. Do they have Blueberry Pancakes too?
»

I'm not sure about the pancakes...

... but I know they serve donuts! I've gone to a number of the senate committee hearings regarding domestic partnership benefits in the past few years. When I do, I've made it a practice to swing by DHOP to see if people are still gathering there before trooping over to the hearings to testify against gay rights. (They are.) Several times I've seen righteous defenders of traditional marriage park in the driveway and carry huge boxes of donuts into the prayer house. Once I saw them carrying donuts in there at about 3 p.m., which struck me as odd... I believe donuts are created to be eaten before 11 a.m. Eating donuts after lunch is UNNATURAL, dammit! So many abominations in this crazy world.
