I have recieved some gentle prodding from a nutty vegetable lover (pun, ha-ha? No? okay. :-) about how to format my reviews of eating establishments without offending those of the non meat eating establishment. I'm an omnivore plain and simple and plan to stay that way, although I make pretty informed decisions most of the time about what I eat. That said, I don't want to debate idealogies or beliefs. Rather this is a request for help. If I eat an omnivore dish and review the restaurant based on that, or wish to call attention to certain menu items that are offensive to some, what is the best way of doing it? Take my last two for instance. Wally's does serve vegetarian meals, although I emphasized a certain product which led to said gentle prodding. Since they cater to ominvores and vegetarians I didn't put in any disclaimers. Now with Tugboat Annies they pretty much cater to omnivores and I put in a disclaimer about what was to follow. Personally everytime I eat out and want to write a review I am not willing to go veggie. Some places I plan to eat at specifically to try veggie, and others I want to eat at and be omnivore. So how can I express my enjoyment of an omnivore dish without disturbing the veggies among us, and yet still produce a review that is suitable for all? Like I say, no debate please. If I want to debate you'll know it, this is not one of those places. Lousy veggie loves prodding and digging and pushing their subversive propaganda on me... hmph... :-p Next thing you know I'll be in a drum circle wearing a headband and reeking of patchouli oil. :-) <sarcasm>

This is one topic where I
Submitted by Ehver Green on Fri, 04/04/2008 - 2:07pm.This is one topic where I think Olyblog needs to take a back seat and let the contributors work it out. I don't know how to say it without being considered a jerk but it bothers me that we have to be somewhat censored about this topic. I think it's wrong. We've take being offended to a whole new level.
I say write what you want within the policies that exist today. You won't be liked by everyone all the time. If that were the goal we'd be awfully boring.
For some time I felt that way too
Submitted by security_six on Fri, 04/04/2008 - 2:11pm.And I'm a pretty offensive person at times. But after some in depth conversations with some people I'm willing to respect certain sensitivities. I think what I will do is make dual postings. One labled "Omnivore" and the other "Veggie" and I will give each coverage. Now if I don't eat off the veggie menu I will give as much detail as possible to ensure someone inclined can make an informed decision.
Now this is what I am going to do personally and I was mainly asking for help in deciding how to balance this out on my end.
I do a lot of things that turn people off. I'm not going to openly carrying my sidearm, that's a carefully protected right. But if I can take a few moments online to keep a few nice people from being disgusted I'll do that. Maybe the two seperate acts will balance each other out.
Maybe I'm just being more sensitive to public perception. I don't know. But the folks I have talked to about this have made a pretty passionate and reasonable argument about it. I want people to read what I write, so I have to modify my approach to reach the broadest possible market.
Besides I get tired of angry veggie lovers. I'm afraid they will come at me with paring knives and melon ballers. :-)

Submitted by Rick on Fri, 04/04/2008 - 2:10pm....but do so in a way that is considerate of other's feelings. I know, I know. There's no manual about how to do that. Just try to be sensitive to others that have strong feelings the way you would if you were visiting with a friend or neighbor.

Submitted by security_six on Fri, 04/04/2008 - 2:13pm.I'm creating a product, my writing. I want folks to read what I write, therefore to serve the broadest possible audience I have made certain choices. If other folks feel that way, great. If not, great.
I have had a great and educational back and forth with some of the veggie folks here and I feel the best way to repay them for their knowledge and opinions is to adapt to their sensitivities.

Submitted by Ehver Green on Fri, 04/04/2008 - 2:33pm.I think if you put a note
Submitted by OperaGirl on Fri, 04/04/2008 - 5:45pm.I think if you put a note that the info you are going to provide is "omnivore oriented" you're fine. Just put in the title "XYZ Restaurant Review (meat mentioned)" and then they'll know not to look. I would think that others who wanted vegan friendly reviews would jump in and start doing that themselves because they would be most knowledgable about it, ya know?

Submitted by JT on Sat, 04/05/2008 - 6:23pm.many of us are omnivores. We all need to get along with reasonable sensibilites to those who disagree. Anything outside of reasonable is...well unreasonable.
I'm an omnivore, always will be. So S6, I look forward to your reviews.
FWIW, I ate at Chopsticks on the suggestion of those here, pretty good chow.

I've gotten some interesting feedback on this...
Submitted by security_six on Sat, 04/05/2008 - 6:49pm.More than guns actually!
Let me clarify my stance and thank those who have commented in public and private. I am an omnivore, that is my culture and my moral beliefs function with that choice. Some are repulsed when I give a description of what I have eaten or what is served. I cannot recall where offhand, but the Bible speaks of not offending one's neighbor or brother by eating meat in their presence if they take offense to it. It seems to me a reasonable compromise to at least tag my reviews in such a way that those who will take offense to me describing my meal will not be turned off. I will take the effort to see what vegetarian/vegan options are available as well, and if I don't eat from that menu, will at least make an effort to mention what is available.
I don't eat meat with every meal anyhow so will not always be giving omnivore reviews.
Thanks again for the feedback I've gotten on this issue. Some things I will compromise on others I won't. This is one I will.
