I went for a midnight bike ride / photography session to Madison Scenic Park earlier tonight. It felt wonderful; the night was beautiful, calm, quiet and warm (relatively). The smell of spring was in the air.

Madison Scenic Park Vista

As I was riding away from the park I glanced back at the Capitol Building. It appeared that the lights in/on the Dome had been extinguished. I wonder if that is standard procedure. Are the Dome lights turned off after a certain hour? It would make sense in an effort to conserve energy.

I could hear frogs croaking in my neighborhood (Upper Eastside!). I love that sound.

cool scene

The scenic overlook is pretty rad... ...when I lived at TESC my posse & I trip'd Capital Forest for mt.bike rides and also for stargazing with some 'scopes we scrounged together (my first love is bikes & a close second is radio astronomy).

oh, so very upset! (j.k.)

I was wondering why the heck I was getting email notifications of posts I hadn't commented on! but yes, it is a lovely spot; a nice walk of an evening. :)

My housemate is building a bike for me

It's an 80's Motobecane touring bike, though the French parts are hard to come by so mine will be a chopped 5 speed. It'll do fine up the hills but I won't be able to bomb down them. That's OK, my philosophy is that down hill is when gravity does the work and I rest.

Anyhow, I'm really looking forward to doing some night riding this summer. I will be sure to take my camera with me.

new bike

That's awesome. I haven't heard of Motobecane, but that's probably because the bike is almost as old as I am, not to mention the fact that I am not well versed in French culture or bicycles.

My current set-up is a Jamis Aurora touring bike, but I think that if I ever get around to actually using it for touring I will have to switch out the gearing for something lower to help me up the hills. As it is the gearing is set to go about 50mph.

Definitely take your camera with you for night photography. There are all kinds of effects to make night photography interesting.

Not True!

I adjusted the spindle size when I overhauled the bottom bracket and put a two sprocket chain ring in front so the bike is a ten speed now. I could have just told you this in person but i don't want olyblog doubting my work.

setting the record straight

Thanks for setting the record straight, I was imagining Rob crawling around town in low gear. I am glad to know that he has the high gears too.

Another version

Here's another version of the same scene:

Dome Lights

The dome lights stay on all night. The lights in the "torch" at the very top are solar powered. It's hard not to love this place when the weather is like it's been recently.

Dome Lights

Maybe I was just imagining it when I saw that the Dome lights had been extinguished within minutes of when I took my last photograph that night. I am pretty sure that they turned off though. Maybe it was a momentary glitch.

Next time I am up and about after midnight I will make an effort to keep an eye for the Cap Dome.

If I remember correctly, when Gary Locke was Governor the lights were not on kept on all night.

lights turned off

I walked up the 4th Ave Bridge at about 12:30 AM last night and noticed that the lights in the dome were extinguished. The "torch" remained on. But the main part of the dome / rotunda were definitely turned off.
