1421: the year China discovered America? offers a controversial history lesson. Even without the intrigue of mystery, the gorgeous boat models and vicarious travel made this film worth checking out.

»

You did get it!

But you took the easy way out with the film! The book is even better! I'm inclined to believe a lot of what is said. From a seafaring point of view, the Americas should have been old news to anyone willing to put up a sail.

Coastal sailing and staying in sight of land is not the safe easy thing many may think it to be. It's easier to cross an ocean than run a coastline. By the time Columbus got around to getting over here the Euroasians should have been regular visitors.

If you liked this, read Heyerdahl's "The Ra Expeditions"

And Tim Severin's "The Brendan Voyage"

I could go on and on, but difusionism is to me very real. It's easy to sit behind a desk and theorize. While some make theories, others set sail and made reality.

Thanks for the suggestions!

My reading list is so long it would have taken me years to get to the book! :)

Your quotes have to be Pratchett, no?

I read 2-3 books a week

so I get around to stuff sooner or later...  plus books about boats and ocean voyages are for some strange reason high on my list.

My quotes are not Pratchett, but good guess.  They are from Futurama, specifically the episode "The Problem with Popplers"  Not a very vegan friendly episode BTW. The "hippie" Free Waterfall Jr. is described in wikipedia article "...as a vegetarian environmentalist who acted as spokesman for "Mankind for Ethical Animal Treatment" (MEAT), a parody of PETA"

Lrrr gets stoned after eating the hippy.  You may not find the episode funny or you may love it as a parody of the whole meat eating thing...  I don't know.  If the context of my quotes are offensive I can change them...

Quotes...

I really liked the quote by Meta that flies love. It showed respect for a woman's voice as well as a sensitivity toward issues of speciesism...and, what could be more hyperlocal than a quote by a local person! :)

Umm... wow.

I had no idea I was doing any of that.  The context of the quote is interesting.

We were talking about how I found a more enviormentally friendly way to rid my boat of flies one day when I left it open in the summer.  I used some Seventh Generation liquid cleaner, and spritzed the flies.  They got too heavy to fly, and then I vaccumed them up.

Meta makes some sort of comment about sweaty greasy flies trapped in a shop vac.

I bust out laughing.

Then she says "Ya' know, even flies love"

When I hear something I like, or agree with, I respect the voice.  Irregardless of sex.  Meta is an intelligent person, even if she is a liberal :-)  (Now I'll have to buy her a drink for that crack...)  Why wouldn't I respect what she says?

When you start segregating "men's voices" or "women's voices" then a divide is created IMHO.

What a sad context...

I wasn't expecting that. One of my goals is to raise consciousness about the way our stratified society allows each of us to discount the experiences of those at the lower ends of the ladder. It's good for me to know that you may not be open to that.

Please refrain from future stories about cruelty, whether fictional or not. I'm just not interested. I want to live in a sensitive and compassionate world.

Sorry...

I shouldn't have related the whole context.  I don't know of a good way to keep bugs out of one's living quarters, or rather how to get them out once they are in...

My problem is I try real hard not to stratify society, so I don't view it as such.  Yes I have my weaknesses still in that regard, but sexual differences isn't one of them.  A voice is a voice to me.  I'm open to what you have to say about stratification, it's there.  I just try not to operate that way.

I shouldn't have told the fly story to you.  Sorry.

It is one thing to demonstrate that the voyages were possible

it is another thing entirely to show they actually happened. The archeological and anthropological evidence is not compelling. While some hypothesize, others examine evidence.
»

DNA evidence

and the presence of non native species that orginiated in China in North America isn't compelling enough?

What about the observatory structure in Rhode Island (I think it is in RI) that resembles similar chinese structures?

Several wrecked chinese junks, including one in the Sacremento River Delta and another in Australia...

The Bimini Road...

Native Americans with chinese DNA and legends of "yellow men"

Not to mention the fact that these voyages were sent out from China...

I could go on and on, but there is some pretty compelling evidence along with some shaky evidence.

We may never know 100% if the Chinese were here before Columbus, but there sure were a lot of others....

First I guess it helps to believe in diffusionism...

Not really into high seas adventure books.

But, I loved the book and the movie. Great read, especially the parts about the connections between religion and pragmatic government.
»

Either I missed those

Either I missed those portions in the movie or they weren't included. Would you care to say more? Sounds interesting!

I don't remember that part of the movie

But, in the book it was the part about when the palace/temple burnt down. The Chinese saw it as a sign that the current ruler (the one who wanted to sail oversees) was cursed by the Gods. It also turned out that he built a really huge palace very quickly and pushed China pretty far socially.

So, while the burning palace might have been more a sign of bad planning, it was seen as a sign from the Gods.

»

Yeah that was

supposedly the reason nothing was done to follow up on the discoveries made so far by the chinese.
