I know I am new to the area and there is much I have yet to learn, but when I received my first full sewer/water bill today, I was shocked at the amount. The bill is literally about three times what I am used to paying.

The breakdown: 1) city sewer charge, 2) LOTT treatment, 3) resident base rate, 4) water consumption, 5) storm water, 6) utility tax.

Essentially this seems to mean that we pay to transport the sewage material from our residences, to treat the sewage at the LOTT facility, an obligatory "base rate" which has not been fully explained to my satisfaction, general water consumption, storm water, and finally a utility tax as the grand finale.

If I didn't know better I would think that either we have a brand spanking new waste water treatment plant and the facility is passing startup costs on to the consumer, OR there is some sort of sewer treatment Cosa Nostra profiting mightily on Oly effluent.

When you say "new to the

When you say "new to the area," where were you from before?

The Deep South

I came here from Georgia.

Different areas, different standards

I suspected you came from out of state. While I don't know the specifics, I do know that regulations on the treatment of wastewater is different from state to state. There might just be higher standards in Washington than there are in Georgia, so the cost of treatment is a higher.

But, now that I have a hair up my rear on this topic, I'm going to try to find some more exact information.

Georgia vs. Washington

While I am interested in more information if you are able to find some, I can say that I feel certain that Washington's standards in the area of environmental protection are higher than Georgia's. Georgia has some shining stars (ex. the Upper Chattahoochee River Keeper), but the sentiment of the general population is decidedly not in line with preservation--consider that the state has been in drought conditions for some time, yet subdivisions and strip malls continue to be built at an alarming rate. There are many things that I love about Georgia, but I already feel more at home here when it comes to environmental issues.

Careful about questioning

Careful about questioning the local powers...people get testy around here when the questioning involves the validity of fees and taxes. All of them are sorely needed and there is no waste at all, not a bit. :)

Learning the ropes

If that is indeed the case then mea culpa. It just looked very strange to me and I thought that OlyBlog would be a great forum to post my question.

You're right about that.

I'm not exactly sure what wilson is referring to.

No "mea culpa" necessary

That's only needed when one is an "asshat." And asking fair questions about your LOTT bill doesn't qualify you for that distinction. Now Wilson on the other hand appears to be scoping out some of the goods in that notorious haberdashery.

A little FYI - you could

A little FYI - you could have edited your comment to correct the misspelling...that is, until someone replied to the comment at which point the statement's set in stone.

Oh Goodness, none at all.

Oh Goodness, none at all. I'm much too humble to expect compensation or even reciprocation for unselfishly giving to my community. That's the price of being such a saint.

Nope, I'm all about the humility...

Please give me a second grace. Please give me a second face. I've fallen far down, the first time around, now I just sit on the ground in your way.
