My brother recently returned from another of his visits to the UK and brought back some products for me to taste test.
One product, Marmite, has already been covered here in OlyBlog as the source of unending gastronomical rhapsody. The other two were new to me: Australia's very own Vegemite, and a UK generic version of Marmite called Tesco Yeast Extract.
So I was presented with all three spread on a bagel or something. Without knowing which was which I was asked to identify the best tasting one.
It wasn't even close. As my brother revealed after I identified the one filled with wholesome goodness, Marmite won hands down. The other two just lacked the zest, the zing, the zippiness, and many other "z" description words.
Tesco came in a very distant 2nd. And, with apologies to my friends Down Under, I'm sorry to say Vegemite was pretty lame.
On another note: Marmite scented candles-- do they exist? If not, why not?

Marmite- where can I get it??
Top Foods
on the Westside of Oly is my best source for this amazing food source. The Eastside Co-op is not so good in my experience. They continue to shelve beyond the expiration date. But even with Top, dig back to the back to get the fresh stuff.
Spotted Dick
This morning I was at Top Foods, enjoying their new remodel, and checked out the International Foods section. Lots of Italian, Hispanic and Asian foods. In one tiny slot there is a space for British foods. And in that space are cans of a dessert, a sponge pudding, called "Spotted Dick."
Yes. You heard me right.
I bought a can, took it home and nuked it for dinner. It was actually not bad. Next time I'll try it with Marmite. It does need something with it, otherwise it is a bit dry.
It is also pricey for what you getting ($6.29). I notice Top Foods can't bring themselves to call it "Spotted Dick" on the receipt, even though the words are there glaring plain as day on the label. Instead my receipt says I bought "Sponge Pddng."
