Olympia, Washington residents are announcing an immediate boycott of all McClatchy Company news products! McClatchy owns The Olympian newspaper, located in Olympia, Washington. Olympia Desk Writer Matt Batcheldor at The Olympian is currently writing innacurate, inflammatory, and divisive articles, to the detriment of the community & neighborhoods of Olympia. The Olympian's Matt Batcheldor is not from Olympia (he has been here less than a year) and should keep his divisive comments regarding Downtown Olympia, to himself, and should not be in a position to monetarily profit from his belittling of the City of Olympia. Newspaper readers nationwide are urged to stop purchasing all McClatchy newspapers, until The Olympian’s editors and writers refrain from portraying Olympia, Washington in a negative light.

My God, my God...
Submitted by Summerisle on Mon, 07/23/2007 - 7:17pm.This is like the Death Star of proposed downtown development ideas. Every single bad idea, from gentrification to the city providing economic incentives, i.e. paying the people who want to invest in housing in Olympia, is hit on.
I like the phrase they keep using "Market rate condos and apartments". Market rate apartments doesn't sound too bad, but a market rate condo is like a market rate McMansion...it's not cheap. The market sets a very high price for it, meaning that new glitzy condos would shut out a lot of people who need housing. Here's a quote about the "market rate" condos in Bremerton: "Opening next month, the development offers 78 units in two waterfront towers priced between $300,000 and $1.7 million each. Following the government’s lead, a private developer built a 66-unit condo building next door."
This sort of housing is unsustainable anyways, unless Olympia aspires to be some sort of bedroom community to Tacoma, because the people who are going to be buying the condos sure aren't going to be coming from Olympia itself.
Excellent point
Submitted by Anonymously Larry on Mon, 07/23/2007 - 7:27pm.Bremerton is an hour ferry ride from Downtown Seattle, thus $300,000 for a water view is chicken feed to the Seattlite.
You've hit the nail on the head....bedroom community.
My best friend lives on Bainbridge. He and his friends all jump the ferry on their bicycles and peddle that which doesn't float.
Tacoma is trying to market its own $300,000 waterview condos so who would want to commute the I-5 slab everyday when you could get the same thing with no commute.
I'd say Downtown Olympia might want to rethink that kind of approach.
