...sorry about the oversight. Hope to see you all there! The pizza is free, donations are welcome, and we want hundreds of people to show up (it's more fun that way). If a hundred people came, and each person gave $10, we would be almost 1/4 of the way toward our total fundraising goal! For the rest of the campaign! Now, we only need three more awesome parties like this... any takers? Got a big house and want to get down with your fellow constituents? There's never been a better excuse to throw a big party!

NO OFFENSE BUT...

I just have to tell you my first impression when I saw this sign...  It looks like something posted in a communist country.  Was a Russian font used or something?  It's just not very inviting.  I don't know Meta or her political approach and seeing this gives me less reason to want to find out more.

Having worked in advertising as my career of choice, visual perception is the deciding factor in ones reason to decide.  Visually, the first impression I get is negative.  Then I see what the sign is for, getting to know a political candidate, and have to wonder why a political candidate would use a russian type font for most of the signage and then the American flag to represent their name & postition they're running for.  There's a lot of mixed messages in this sign.  I've seriously come back to this several times to see if my first impression changed and it hasn't.  The first word that pops into my head each time is communist.  From what I've researched, Meta Hogan is far from a dictator type leader as most russian leaders were so I can't get past the font.  Signage should reflect a personality and I doubt Meta wants people thinking the word communist right off the bat when they see something represeting her!

Just one voters opinion to consider should you hold more fundraisers in the future.  If your signage isn't visually appealing, less people will pay attention to it.

It's the reverse "R" dude

It's code, like spelling Clinton with a "K." It jumps out like a sore red thumb to some folks...like me.  But then, I grew up in the Fulda Gap.

Merwyn

I'm not trying to imply that a russian font was used, just stating that if somebody asked me for one word to describe the sign it would be communism.  I mean no disrespect to Meta at all, just wanted her to know that's how one person sees her advertisment and I wouldn't want her to lose votes because of the way a sign comes across!

I agree

that was my first impression too. I think it's silly myself, but some folks will view it negatively. Then there is the whole ToysRus connection!

I saw the font as similar to

I saw the font as similar to what's used for old labor and wobblie signs. But then again there are those who equate that with the Reds.

It is a good point about what other people's perceptions might be. I just think it's funny when old folks (I'm thinking of others, not any old folks on Olyblog) still warn about the evil red Russians.

It's a fair call, but Society's to blame. ~ Right! We'll be charging them too!

Watch it!  Not only am I a large woman, I'm old too!  ROFL!

My kids and all their friends never fail to remind me that 42 is old, TO THEM!

You're a man after my own heart!  But then again, in these days & times, I could be considered old enough to be your mom!  LOL!

HA HA Merwyn

Yeah, you're right!  That was a big EW and scary mental image of a 7/8 yr. old huh?!  LOL!

But hey, the positive side is your male friends might have thought you had the hottest mom and I could have shopped with all your female friends!  AH HAHAHAHA!

Is 15 too young to think

Is 15 too young to think about having a child?
»

FROM A MOM'S PERSPECTIVE

YES!  15 is too young to think about having a child!

I can say this given I have a 15 yr. old daughter who will be 16 in October.  She can't take care of her hamster let alone a child!

Times are a changin'!  This isn't the early 1800's where we need to populate to keep civilization going!  We're overpopulated!  And there are too many children in foster care now as it is because some kid thought it would be neat to have a baby!

You say "communism"...

Please explain.

Rick

Being old, my education on communism was that it wasn't in the peoples best interest.  It was defined as economical & political depression where certain classes weren't allowed a voice or opinion and lived in less than desirable conditions whether it was Russia or China.

I was just never educated that communism was a good thing.  If I'm wrong, please re-educate me!  My 25 yr. class reunion is coming up next summer if that's any indication of how long it's been for me!

Don't take this wrong

Don't take this wrong because I'm not calling for the United States to switch to a Communist Nation.

The conditions concerning classes being denied their voice is separate from the economic discussion: There are plenty of people denied a voice in Capitalist countries, often for reasons of class.

Soviet Russia, Cuba, Red China, are notorious for human rights violations. But so are many African nations, none (or hardly any) which could be called Communism.

Many people who are turned off by Russian imagery are probably recalling things like the Cold War, the Missile Crisis, the gulag, Tianemen Square, etc.

My problem with Communism is there's no incentive to do a good job. Then you end up with crap like shoddy tanks and weapons that helps Iraq lose the first Gulf War, or buildings that won't withstand earthquakes, etc. My problem with Capitalism is people die of starvation while enough food to feed the entire planet is allowed to rot so that prices don't drop.

Marx's idea...

...was that all classes would be raised to the same level, not that any class would be brought down -- this is a common misconception (no pun intended).

The ideal is obviously a hybrid system where there is a balance between market forces on the one hand, and common good on the other. You're going to hear a lot of fear-mongering in the up-coming health care debate about communism and socialism. It is my hope that everyone can take a look at that and say: "Wait a minute -- is it really socialism if we decide that health care is such an important right that no one should profit from it?"

For me, that ideal was never

For me, that ideal was never achieved.  With my limited knowledge of communism I'd say the reality was a single, monopolistic, controlling party that offered no real choice.

I agree with you 100% on the health care statement.

DOH!

*smacking my forehead & doing my best Homer Simpson impression!*

Leave it to me to turn a political gathering into a communism discussion!

Sorry Meta!  I seriously was only concerned for your future fundraising!

Oh, you didn't turn it into a discussion on communism

You made an observation. The "discussion" begain when the flyer was created. We should talk about symbols.

Sorry for the confusion. I

Sorry for the confusion. I found a neat font (it's actually called "Soviet", so you nailed that one, Onry!), I used it on a handbill with twenty other neat fonts (a real graphic design no-no), and I handed out the flyers to people I know (most of whom, as you can tell from this conversation, were not automatically turned off by it). It wasn't really intended for wide distribution--although I appreciate the promotion (thanks enpen!)--otherwise I would have designed it for a wider audience. Thanks for the input, everyone! You guys are awesome.

I hope somebody else took pictures, because mine all turned out craptastic. Sorry, Meta.

On the flip side, my family had a wonderful time and my daughter particularly enjoyed the apples. Three cheers for a mayor that inspires families and kids to come together and make apple juice!
