So, this past month I have had more than one incredibly negative encounter with the man, and from what I have heard, so have many other people in downtown. In fact, if you find yourself in a crowded area in downtown and even utter his name, a chorus of disdain, anger, and out-right hatred will echo you from anyone in your immediate vicinity. Try it! It's hilarious! It seems as though everybody has beef with Mr. Nutter.

Recently Michael Nutter called the police on me because I tied my (well behaved) dog to the lightpost outside of his shop while I bought a cup of coffee at B&B nextdoor. Apparently, it is illegal to leave animals unattended in public. I'm sure. I'm sure that warrants a 9-11 call and an emergency dispatcher's time, and a bunch of tax money. Wow.

Michael Nutter has been a comical NIMBY nuisance ever since he came to town, and has a history of harassing downtowners for the STUPIDEST reasons he can conjure up. I know of many people who claim that Nutter called the cops on them for mundane, everyday activities that aren't even illegal, and that when the officers got there to question them, they didn't even know what was going on. I have even heard stories of him making rude comments and harassing school age children that dare to touch the pristine glass of the windows of his customer-free shop. The (awesome) local punk band The Shorebirds has even written a song about Nutter and how he is ruining that entire strip of downtown. During the procession of the species parade, multiple people scrawled chalk notes on the sidewalk in front of his building denouncing him as "a big meanie" and telling him to piss off.

Enough is Enough! Michael Nutter and his attempts at keeping downtown the most mundane, uninteresting, fancy schmancy business oriented, gentrified strip mall will not stand! His harassment of downtowners is inexcusable, and his excessive use of police calls serves to widen the already intolerable power imbalance between business owners and street folk. I know he has money, but that shouldn't mean that he has more power than me in a place this small. I refuse to tolerate this man's ludicrous behavior any longer.

At times his actions are almost silly, but then I stop and think about the oncoming assault on downtown culture, with the imminent noise ordinance, disbanding of height restriction on downtown buildings (*cough* CONDOS! *cough*), the "pedestrian interference ordinance," and other evil plans that are hatched in the evil real estate developer's evil laboratory that are going to destroy the place that I live and hang out it, and suddenly, its not so funny. Suddenly I picture downtown Olympia awash with Michael Nutters, except in this nightmare they are the owners of the Gap, Taco Bell, and Pier 1, and in this nightmare I hardly notice the cops yelling at me because I can't hear them over the incessant blast of MUZAK that is coming out of the two competing Starbucks that are across the street from each other. Its happening right now! Nutter is just the beginning!

So what can we do about it?

Obviously, no matter what we do, Nutter is just going to call the police and try to get us arrested, so none of the usual three-word-chant sit in type stuff will work. It is time to explore more creative options. I propose that we get hundreds of little kids to write him letters that say he is a bad man, that his actions are discriminitory, and that he makes babies cry. Ask every little kid you know to write one, we should make a campaign about it. J.E.R.K. : Juveniles Emphatically wReaking Kapitalism... or some such acronym.

I also propose that we have a march and celebration IN FAVOR of Michael Nutter where we bake him cookies and have a twelve day party for him and very sarcastically (but without ever saying we hate him) praise him for what a wonderful person he is. This party should have clowns and a petting zoo and balloons and streamers and glitter and the whole bit.

I also propose that we start a "Have You Hugged Michael Nutter Today?" campaign, emphasizing the fact that maybe no one is, and that's why he's so full of bourgeoisie rage against the common folk. I forsee large posters, buttons, t-shirts, and everything possible to make sure that he knows about it.

Got any other ideas? I would like for this to be fun, creative, and not mean spirited, and not illegal or super serious. This could be the type of thing that eases some humor back into Olympia after all the crazy May Day backlash. Maybe it will be good to laugh a little bit while doing something constructive...

Shorebirds has a song about him

And we're playing this Saturday at the Voyeur (sorry for the plug), and, yes, he is pathological.

I can't remember who it was,

I can't remember who it was, but my favorite Nutter story is when someone was standing in front of the store with a cup of coffee and he came out and furiously started sweeping the leaves from the sidewalk all around where the person was standing there watching him.  I hope I'm not just making it up!  Anyone remember?

What business does this

What business does this individual own? I'm not familiar with him. (Apparently that's a good thing...)
»

he owns Michael Nutter

he owns Michael Nutter Jeweler's on Capitol Way between 5th and Legion.
»

This just seems odd to me

...and I so hate to see an unattended tethered dog that I am tempted to make those calls myself.
»

As much as folks don't like the guy...

This post makes me feel uncomfortable.

Actually, the whole "those folks won't be like us" logic in the condo threads make me feel uncomfortable, but I'll just address this post right now.

Picking on one person specifically smacks of gossip, that you're trying to correct him by calling him out in public. Especially when you get into the "what are we going to do about this guy" suggestions. While he owns a business and apparently his behavior is outside the normal bounds, he isn't a particullarly public person.

I'm not trying to defend him (I don't know him), I'm just questioning your approach.

Dialogue has been approached before

On many of the occasions when Michael Nutter has yelled at me, referred to me as "YOU PEOPLE" (whatever that means), tried to sweep me off the sidewalk with a broom, accused me of vagrancy, loitering, lawlessness, whatever, he has always done so in a very loud, very public way. I know of other people, particularly within the street community that have had the same experiences. Every single time he has treated me in this way, I have firmly told him that I don't think my actions are illegal (is standing somewhere and drinking coffee on a nice day a crime?), and then asked him why he thought it was appropriate to continue yelling at me, or call the police on me when I am very willing to talk to him. I have tried it. Many people have tried talking to him. It does not work. He does not listen. Thats why I feel that people who have had similar experiences with this man should ban together and create a community response to his actions. I am not the first person to have this idea by any means. If it's not ok for me to create a situation in which Nutter is forced to listen to my concerns, and the concerns of the community that he operates in, then why is it ok for this person to insult me, verbally attack me, yell at little kids, and create an environment in which people have to worry that the police are going to come after them for no reason. This is not gossip. This person has routinely acted towards people in a way that is not neighborly, not respectful, and not community supportive. These are things that he has done, not speculation. I think he should be accountable to that. I wish he would listen when people try to talk to him, but he won't. And thats why I think a community response is warranted, because his behavior affects the community.

In response to Emmett and Gug,

This is a community. Like Cassie says, a LOT of people in this community have been harassed by Mr. Nutter. I think if someone is not being a "good" member of the community, then it's OK for people to get together to address it. He is a public figure in the sense that he makes himself one by leaving his store and harassing people. He also once threw a fit inside of B&B because the tamping process was too loud, he ended up having to be escorted out by an employee. Mr. Nutter's antisocial behavior should be addressed by the community, he may not be breaking any laws, but he is affecting people in a negative way. Perhaps someone should go interview him for the blog and get his perspective.

yes

This is what is missing:

Perhaps someone should go interview him for the blog and get his perspective.

Holy Smokes!

"[his] antisocial behavior should be addressed by the community, he may not be breaking any laws, but he is affecting people in a negative way."

Maybe we need an ordinance.

Sorry, but if you have a problem with a fellow citizen, you really should take it up with them rather than on a community blog. His behavior and status do not rise to the level of being a "community concern" in my opinion. And to be honest, there was one particular employee who was a particularly enthusiastic tamper. He annoyed the hell out of me...and I was just waiting in line. I sure wouldn't blame a neighbor for complaining about it...and how many times did he do so before blowing his lid? I sure don't know.

»

Woah there Scruff Mcgruff

Nobody's saying anything about an ordinance. I don't think we need an ordinance.

I'm saying I think a proper response at this point is a community response. That doesn't mean everybody go down with pitchforks, it just means people talk about it. Hopefully he'll be included in that at some point.

I've only had one encounter with him, and he wasn't very nice to a friend of mine, but almost everyone I know has been yelled at by him when out on the public sidewalk in front of the space he rents for his shop. I'd like to know where he's coming from and why he is the way he is. I'd also like it if he'd stop harassing people.

I second Rob's response

For those of you who are unfamiliar with Mr. Nutter, I sincerely envy you in your ignorance.

For those of us who have been sneered at, threatened, shouted at, swept around, or had the menacing-fist-shaking-yelling directed our way for no good reason, I think that we're not overstepping the bounds of social propriety to share these experiences with one another and attempt to discover a way to deal with this on-going problem.

My problem with Mr. Nutter, to echo Cassie's point, is that his words and actions show us that he believes that he OWNS the public space (sidewalk) not only in front of his business but also on the rest of the dang block.  Thus, he's called the police to complain of "trespassing" by people using the public right of way.  This is a waste of the city's resources (and most officers, I've been told by those involved in some of these "Nutter call" incidents, acknowledge as much when they arrive on the scene).

Worse, in my opinion, this sense of ownership of public space and the power or right to control who can be in this public space is part and parcel of the new model of Olympia development:  ignoring laws or making up laws to suit an individual's prejudices, to clear the way for more "retail customers, not social service customers".

So, to get back to Cassie's ideas, I think that a campaign of mean-spirited letters or the like won't really work, since this will just escalate the hate.  Instead, I'd like to figure out a way to actually show him what he's missing, to invite him to "come out and play" or at least try smiling.  Maybe we should declare a "Michael Nutter Day" and give him cards, presents, smiles, random-kindnesses, all condensed into one day.  Thoughts?

michael nutter is anti-breakfast!

I'm going to get a puppy and name it michael nutter jr and make a little name tag for it and hang it around its neck. and put it in a basket with a little bonnet on its head and leave it on Michael Nutter's front porch. and in the morning when he discovers it and sneers at it in disgust and goes back into his house, then comes back out with a can of gasoline and a match, i'll pop out and rescue the puppy last second but i will have caught the whole thing on tape and then i'll show it at the next oly film festival

Or, you could just leave it

Or, you could just leave it alone already and take it off the front page.  It's pretty ridiculous that this makes the front page.  Whose the media?

where I draw the line...

as long as you are sharing experiences and not just judgments, I believe it helps our community and belongs in this forum. for example : Sam is a liar I hate him! vs: I'm upset, I paid sam to mow my lawn, then he never did and left town.

It's not YOUR downtown

How would you feel if you paid $3000 a month in rent and had someone else's dog tied up and left on your porch while the owner was relaxing?

Michael is a great supporter of the local GLBT community, and he's a man trying to do business in downtown Olympia. It's hard enough without dealing with folks who care mainly about themselves and are always out to fight 'the man,' for whatever stylish reason.

Cassie and friends, no one OWNS downtown. Michael Nutter doesn't, and you sure as hell don't either. It's where all of us live, and where some of us MAKE a living. We all should try harder to understand and RESPECT where each of us come from. I include myself, too.

I rarely join in discussion here on OlyBlog, but I saw this reeking of a outright personal attack lacking any context whatsoever. It was a bitch session from somebody who feels they were wronged.

I'm sorry you got your feelings hurt by the man Cassie. You don't have to be his friend. And the next time something doesn't go my way, you won't see it on OlyBlog.

»

Anthony,

Welcome to OlyBlog.

You're right about respect. There seems to be a lack of respect for others from Mr. Nutter, at least that's what I'm hearing from many here, and in the community that don't post here.

It really doesn't matter how much he pays in rent, he still doesn't control the sidewalk, or what happens on it. His control stops at the storefront. The police have confirmed this to him, yet he continues to call the police on people who aren't breaking any laws. It's reaching nuisance levels, and the police are getting tired of it as well.

If you read all of the comments to this article you can see that it's much more than just Cassie who's had bad experiences with Mr. Nutter.

As far as moral relativism goes, Dick Cheney is a supporter of the GLBTQ community (at least in the sense that he supports gay marriage), but that doesn't necessarily make him a "nice guy" in other ways.

Cassie should have made that point then. All of the nonsense clouded the issue.

It is kinda funny

From the desccriptions of his behavior it sound to me he is one more in a long, loud, and proud history of iconoclastic Olympians unafraid and unashamed to let it all hang out. He's that grouchy old man who shook his fist at me and my 12 peers shouting "You kids get off my lawn!"

Although I live a block away I have yet to have the McNutter Experience. Sound hilarious. My response to being harassed as y'all have described would be to chuckle, tell him to go to Hell then turn my back on him and move on. The sylvan joys of Sylvester Park is a mere block away.

He sounds like a dick but as long as he's not a physical threat God Bless him and his anti-social behavior. Mr. Mcnutter hurts himself far more than anyone else could. Let it go.

»

Yeah...

I agree, but it was M. Nutter who got the tables and chairs taken away from B&B with his incessant complaints. The owner of B&B has apologetically come out to ask me to move from the front of the store and cited Nutter as the exclusive reason why. I wasn't smoking or tying a dog up or anything.

If he was just a jerk, that would be one thing. Olympia welcomes all types. The problem is, he's a jerk who wants to impose his will on others. That sucks.

I'm glad to hear he contributes to the community in at least some way. Maybe he'll realize we're totally on his side (local business, downtown, etc.) and stop treating everyone so crappily.

B & B

I like their coffee. I never go there because I couldn't stand the dogs tied up out front and the incessant smoking. The tables and chairs needed to go. It was disgusting.
»

Heartily agreed

Even if I wasn't getting a coffee, I hated having to walk by.

Suprising.

I have had many interactions with Michael Nutter and I have never noticed any such behavior that would constitute such a "Reaming"... He and I speak a few times a week and maintain a great rapport. I am blind to this whole "world" of hatred for the man. Although I have never stood near his business, nor written on the sidewalk with chalk, I can confidently say that I do not think he needs this negative publicity.

I'm curious if S6 has ever stood in front of his store

hey from Seattle

Pardon me, 'scuse me, former Oly resident now in Seattle, occasionally visiting you guys to see what's up, otherwise hiding in the back here, but I gots a question... Why are the police letting Nutter get away with calling 911 on decidedly non-emergency matters (unless that was an exaggeration)? Isn't that a misdemeanor? If he hasn't gotten the message by now that he's out of touch, then isn't he the public nuisance now? Seriously. Just flip it around. He's the irritant. That's all. Miss you Oly. --P
