Thursday, May 11th 2006, Olympia Washington

On Monday, the Tacoma News Tribune mentioned (casually) that the first Stryker Brigade which went to Iraq would be going back by the end of May, through the Port of Olympia.

Thursday morning, the Port of Olympia has five Coast Guard fast boats (These belong to the MSST unit from Seattle, unit number 91101) in the water, and 10 or 15 men on the quay doing "training."

When is the next high tide? Which ship is heading through Nisqually Reach or the Tacoma Narrows as you read this? Which mode of transportation will the Stryker vehicles use - rail, road? Those vehicles have not yet arrived, and the Port's observation deck is unlocked (which is unusual for an actual loading operation). The troops on the quay might actually be on a training mission, to be rolled into a protective mission as the vehicles arrive. Who knows? Let's see what collaborative journalism can accomplish.

By the way, the 833rd Transportation Battallion public affairs officer (Heidi) had no comment. And she still wonders which papers I write for. ("Who are you with?" "I'm alone, why?" "Who do you write for?" "I wrote for a bunch of papers, but I'm not on assignment, I'm myself." "The 833rd Transportation Battallion has no comment at this time.")

Maybe your results will vary, if you can cite an actual newspaper for targeting by the DOD's TALON program: her number is 206-764-6503.

The Port's payphone (at the observation deck) is 753-9794. Maybe someone will pick up and tell you what's going on.

Sound the alarm!

Why are you against the Port of Olympia allowing military shipments?

I have a general idea (tacit approval of the conflict in Iraq) but just wanted to confirm.

OMJP Stories on the Port's cooperation with Military uses

Essentially, the war in Iraq (and the subsequent occupation) are not legal, defensive war but offensive, and hence illegal, war. The kind of thing we hanged high ranking Nazis for in the late 1940's.

»

Best of luck with that...

What, exactly, is your point? Don't bother with the rhetorical war propaganda, I can get that anywhere. so, the Port is being used to deploy military equipment, big deal. What is your real argument?

Just so you know - the CG doesn't take things like this lightly, meaning they'll have their Port Security Units either on location or on standby, and you don't want to mess with them. They're not the orange and white CG - but by all means, please get yourself shot in the name of whatever your unclear and pusilanimous issue is.

I'm sure "Heidi" forwarded your questions to the higher ups, putting you on the NSA's list of peeps to watch. That was really smart.

Bravo!
»

Huh?

Hello, uh - crack hole. Hmmm.

"pusilanimous." Hmmm... Try two "L"s in that, it might work better... here it is: "weak and cowardly; frightened of taking risks"

Sorry, that would apply better to the man who hides behind a moniker to shoot attempted insults at someone who clearly and succinctly explained why he does not like the Port of Olympia (a local governmental entity) supporting the war in Iraq.

Oh, and if you want my "real" take on the issues, you might try listening to my radio show on Free Radio Olympia, where I also use my real name while I commit a class C felony, broadcasting without a license. So much for claiming I am cowardly.

I've been taking photos of the MSST teams which cover the Port of Olympia every time they come. They have not fired any of their automatic weapons at me yet, nor have they visited my abode, nor have the nice men in the clean white shirts hauled me off to Gitmo or Western State. So calm down, and re-read my Actual Reasons for Opposing the Port's use by the Military: THE WAR IS ILLEGAL SO WE SHOULD NOT BE HELPING IT CONTINUE.

Which part of that was "unclear" to you?

»

Decaf dude, decaf.

Pusillanimous - weak and cowardly. Yes, you are correct in the definition, I must have mixed it up with the one I had read years ago meaning "small and meaningless". Cheap shot on spelling, but if that's the type you are, so be it.

OK, you don't like the Port of Olympia helping conduct what you call an Illegal war but it's OK for you to commit a felony? Your logic is all messed up. Illegal is illegal, be it war or FCC violations, somewhere in there you drew a personal line that said one is OK and the other is not, which makes you a hypocrite no better than the ones conducting the illegal war.

As for remaining calm, you might want to try decaf and turn off the caps lock key...
»

Stupid Distractions

If you think spelling is a cheap shot, what do you call asking someone to restate themselves and then writing that you will not listen to them? Is that logic?

I break the Federal law on radio broadcasting because my First Amendment rights to use my airwaves are far more important to me than the statute which activated the FCC in the middle 1930's. It's not hypocritical to stand up for my own rights and yours.

I'm not interested in debating the war with you, either - so don't bother to post on my stories or I will lock them and you can spew at someone else.

»

Stupid is getting a bit low

I think you're missing the point - I'm more or less on your side.

I'm not debating the war with you - but if you feel the need to silence me, please do.
»

HUH?

You're "more or less on (my) side?"

How do you figure that? What the hell do you write to your ENEMIES, if this is how you treat your ALLIES?

As for not putting up with nasty tone and disrespectful namecalling, that is not silencing, honey - it is your right to go off and create your own page on this blog. This one is mine and you'll show me some manners.

(This was posted prior to my reading your call for a truce)

THE WAR IS ILLEGAL-------NOT!

I understand you don't agree with the war Drew....but how do you figure it is illegal?

Lets read, shall we?

Yeah I have something

If that's all you got then we are done!

United Nations, International Law, etc

I didn't suggest Kofi was the President of the United States, WF. I suggested that in the relations of one government versus another (y'know, international relations) there is a body of established international law which was created by the United States and other governments after World War Two. Our Senate ratified these treaties and we're bound by them just as we are by our domestic laws. It's in the Constitution that we treat international treaties as co-equal law with our own Constitution, that international treaties are superior law to statutes passed by the Federal Government.

If you're willing to ignore / throw out that entire body of law, then you're going to have an awfully hard time getting any of these terrorists extradicted from anywhere else they may be caught.

So as a purely futile gesture, why (in your opinion) did we bother trying and hanging those Nazis at the end of WWII? Was it just because we won?

»

FRO

So what State law are you in violation of for your antics on FRO? Clearly you and all who transmit on that station are in violation of Federal Law, but you think you are in violation of State Law too, I doubt it? If there was a State Law, I'm guessing you would have been arrested by now. And I'm also guessing the Feds have too much other stuff to deal with or they would have shut you down too.

Assumptions

Where did you get the assumption that I was claiming to violate a state law?

THE WAR IS ILLEGAL -- CORRECT

The FCC itself is often illegal, or least unconstitutional. The Iraq war is clearly not legal as we were never attacked by Iraq, sorry. Pound that through your helmets. Follow it up with some political history of a place called Vietnam. And yes- people like me said the war was illegal and protested it BEFORE a boot ever landed on Iraqi soil. So listen up jarheads- it's our port. We pay for it, we pay for your f*ckin war, your armor and your equipment, and we financed what has caused tens of thousands of innocent Iraqi deaths (that's 10,000's BEYOND what Saddam would have killed), shaming all of us as Americans, and if we want to go down and make our voices heard at the port we sure as hell will do it. That's a democracy- blast whoever wants our names and photos. You want to know who is against the war? You want an NSA list? Start with my name and then add 75% of America you ignorant hypocrites. If you don't like it, try living under an occupation like you've created in Iraq today. You are cowards and your dishonor is a shame for all of us.

ROTFLMAO

DU Ordnance, since when do we need to be attacked to take military action against a country/local? But if you feel we need justification like that, anywhere terrorists live, can expect to get the same, and they were and are terrorists in Iraq prior to us going there. And if governments harbor terrorists, they can feel the pain too. If needed we can head off to Syria, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, 3/4+ of the African countries, Indonesia, etc.

As far as the innocents that have been killed, no one ever said war was antiseptic.

I'm sure you anti-war types will go make yourselves heard yet again at the port. And because the law enforcement here is so milk toast you will probably get to do it with no consequences. But I will re-state what crackhole said. The groups of fighting men and women that are there to protect the scene will use force if needed and aren't afraid to shed YOUR blood if you choose to be less than peaceful. AND I SAY, GOOD FOR THEM! Protest all you want, but don't get stupid, cuz stupid WILL HURT!!

Like I said before, obviously the FCC thinks of FRO as a wart on Olympia's ass. Because if they wanted to take action against them, it would take all of about 30 minutes to locate them and arrest them and confiscate all their equipment.

I don't think you know what courage is....let's see you take on the ones protecting at the port for the cause you think is so righteous. If it is that important, will you really do something, are are you too scared?!

Inaction is just this

An Answer

"DU Ordnance, since when do we need to be attacked to take military action against a country/local? "

Since we helped found the United Nations in the late 1940's and signed onto the UN Charter, which prohibits wars of agression (as opposed to wars of defense against another state which has invaded yours).

Everybody LOVES FRO!

"obviously the FCC thinks of FRO as a wart on Olympia's ass. Because if they wanted to take action against them, it would take all of about 30 minutes to locate them and arrest them and confiscate all their equipment."

whadda you know about it? obviously, the FCC field ops in Kirkland love FRO! they probably listen all the time!

besides, sure they could find us pretty easily, they already have. but they need a judge to sign a warrant for arrest of the equipment. and they almost never arrest people.

Everybody but White Feather

Maybe they will make an arrest exception for djmega, how you gonna like jail dj???

Bwahahahahaha!

The FCC itself is often illegal, or least unconstitutional.

Please cite specific examples - otherwise your claim is baseless just speculation.

The Iraq war is clearly not legal as we were never attacked by Iraq, sorry.

Er. Dude. Based on your statement, half of WWII was illegal, I can't remember Germany attacking us. Speaking of WWII, it was the spinmeister hisself, Drew, who compared the current administration's war to Hitler and how we hanged them for their actions - well, I don't see anyone complaining about our lack of non-action in Sudan to stop the genocide there. Why is that? Oh, right - you need to complain about "your" port. Forget about genocide, your port is important, not the lives of people getting slaughtered daily.

So listen up jarheads- it's our port.

Uh. Yeah. who's "we"? The Peoples United Republic of Olympia? If it's your port, I agree - go take it back. Last I checked, it was everyone's port. Sorry to disappoint, but I was never in the Marines, don't have a helmet, though I did once and spent more time in wars you'll never know about in jungles facing oppressive governments and rebels than you could ever dream of.

If you don't like it, try living under an occupation like you've created in Iraq today.

Well, thank you very much for your ignorance and blindness. What exactly are you saying with that statement? Are you capable of an original thought or just complile what all of the anti-war people say? I've been on both sides and in the middle, meaning I get my facts from people who really know what they're talking about, not just rhetoric. I've actually seen first hand what it is like to live under those governments.

You want to piss and moan about a port? Are you kidding? I mean, if you're going to protest and have an effect, at least protest something that will work. A port? That's just laughable. Sure, sure, They're going to stop all shipments of miltary equipment because you and maybe 3 other people showed up and complained and cried around the peace tree. I'm sure Bush will just stop the war right then, apologize and step down from office.

You are cowards and your dishonor is a shame for all of us.

You have issues, man. And seeing as you really know nothing about me, or anyone here for that matter, fall into the category of Generic War Protester Without The Facts. I never said I agreed with the war, was for it and continually attempt to divert you to a more useful venue of protest. Read posts before spewing - it helps.

This concludes my input on the legality of The War, beacause it seems to be pretty much a useless discussion. However, if you and your 3 cohorts, 2 of which will bail at the last minute, decide to hold a protest at the Port, I wish you the best of luck.

War debates get so old...

Grief gets old, too

The pain of losing a son or daughter, parent, brother or sister can last for years, decades, it gets old fast but it's still there, and that's what's at stake for the Iraqis and the families of the U.S. military, so maybe you should leave this boring old debate behind and find something good to watch on TV.
»

I couldn't agree more

I lost a brother when his F/A-18 crashed during OSW, and have a brother on his 3rd tour in Iraq, with 4 more expected. My wife watched her friends killed during ethnic cleansing, in front of her, before she was 10 - we both know that feeling very, very well.

My simple point is this: If you're going to protest the war, which I am all for, make it count.

Just simply saying it's illegal isn't going to stop it.
»

Put your own money where your mouth is...

Crackhole, you are right that saying the war is illegal has not stopped it, but your 'advice' was not asked for and I am not going to detail for you, in public, any direct action I might have planned to stop the Port of Olympia from moving another combat brigade toward this war. I hope you can understand my need for Opsec in this environment.

What are YOU going to do to stop this war, or are you going to dish out advice and take none of your own?

»

we're on the same side

From a casual readers POV on a public forum, the original post seems like just more text in a sea of endless text - if you have a plan, then man, whatever it is, go for it. Opsec understood.

As for my involvement, I do it through education of inner city youth and help them have a voice. Some of the actions taken can't be voiced, but you could figure it out.

So - I hereby wave the white flag, apologize for intruding on your posts and in belief that we see more eye-to-eye that I originally thought, extend a hand of peace. Accepted?

If you want to have pro active off air discussions, email me @ idiot@crackhole.com

There is a reason I use a moniker and not my real name...

Short and sweet

"So - I hereby wave the white flag, apologize for intruding on your posts and in belief that we see more eye-to-eye that I originally thought, extend a hand of peace. Accepted?"

Yes.

I use my real name for my political work because the most important thing about political ethics for me is honesty. (If I can't tell you who I am, why the heck should you listen to a word I say?) I therefore tend to have a jaundiced and intolerant attitude toward those who hide and snipe. But I accept that some of my friends go through life named "Squirrel" for reasons similar to your own. I, on the other hand, have no such aspirations for longevity. I've already died twice - it just doesn't scare me like it used to...

Back to the facts at hand...

The Coast Guard MSST unit which was training at the Port of Olympia left before 4:30PM Thursday, so the 'alarm' raised is slightly premature, apparently.

As far as we know, the Stryker Brigade will be going out through the Port of Olympia by the end of May, so stay tuned.

Tides

Tides for Budd Inlet can be chosen on this page and printed out

The three days I think are most likely for a return of a large ship to Olympia's Marine Terminal are Thursday, May 25, Friday, May 26, and Saturday, May 27. The high tides are approximately equal height twice per day during this period, lending more flexibility to anyone navigating the inlet. High tides during this period are around 14-15 feet twice per day. The tides just before this are only that high very early in the morning (2-3AM) which makes the turning basin operation very dangerous, since it is dark out at that time. But if they did slip in before Thursday the 25th, they would have better tides for leaving with a full ship once they got loaded. Stay alert, and watch the Port!

Protest the Government not us.

I will not say that I am for or against the war in Iraq. What I will say is that I shall soon find my boots on the desert sands of that far off place. I am a Medic. I joined the Army to heal. As we have trained for the Army often performs MEDCAP missions where we will go into a town and make sure all the children are current on their immunizations, treat any wounds, and generally provide on site medical care to these villages and towns. You have no idea how expensive of an undertaking that can be, or how dangerous it is for us, and our providers. They never show this stuff on the news. Pardon the horrible organization and spelling of this post as it’s late and I'm tired. I heart about your protest today at the port and it angered me. Not because you were protesting, or what you were protesting, but because the only thing you succeeded in was giving me and my fellow soldiers a hard time and making us have less time with our families. We are operators not policy makers. We volunteered to do a job. That job is handed down to us by a civilian government according to the constitution. What I think about the war in Iraq is totally irrelevant. What anyone in this Stryker Brigade, even its commander thinks about it is irrelevant. We are soldiers and we go where the civilian leadership needs us. If you want this to stop, talk to them, not us. AS I said, we are not policy makers... We are given a mission and we prosecute it to the best of our abilities. Don't hassle the soldiers, hassle Congress and the White House.
