I buried this entry as a comment in another thread, but since OlyBlog's purpose and mission have been discussed and debated in other places, I have been asked to elevate this to Code Orange:

I just returned from the ALA Conference in DC. One of the presentations was by Jason Zengerle of The New Republic who gave his take on the place of blogs in journalism. His main message was that "blogs are political tools, not information tools." He gave his side of the Daily Kos controversy. In an attempt to find a progressive third party account of this episode, I looked here . Worth reading for those who regard blogging as an activist tool regardless of left/right leanings.

Interesting stuff

The problem with the MJ article, as with almost all MSM output, is that it focuses entirely on the conflict instead of the content. The fact is, blogs like dKos, myDD, Firedoglake, Eschaton, etc, have power now because they represent the voices of many angry people. They are angry about the fixation with personality over policy in mainstream politics, and they're angry about the ineptness of the left to counteract the tightly coordinated actions of the far right of the American political spectrum.

I'll not repeat the many ways that this right-wing philosophy has bankrupt our economy, enriched the super-rich, endangered civil rights, and alienated the world. This was all achieved while the mainstream press was either cowed by threats of un-patriotism or distracted by the meaningless lives of celebrities.

Blogs represent the voices of Americans, unfiltered by corporate media. It's messy. But so is democracy.

Bush Inc. = Traitors

So what you are saying is that what makes a blog great is that American bloggers (citizens) can view George W Bush and his underlings as the traitors they are , but we would never be able to state that fact using any of the traditional corporate media?
»

I would say...

...that what makes blogs great is the ability for people outside the system to exert political power. One way this happens is to investigate the misdeeds of the executive branch (a la Josh Marshall at Taking Points Memo). There is also direct organization, fund raising, fact checking, knowledge sharing, etc.
