For those of you who don't know, I advocate for the idea of our built landscape as an interactive tool for our artists. This Monday (March 3) I will be talking about some aspects of the movement as a part of the Arts Roundtable series held at our downtown library. My desire is to see Olympia help its artists realize our city. I am daily amazed at the amount of artistic talent coursing through Olympia and I think creating our city's expression is integral to establishing our identity as we move toward a further development of our downtown core. Art often treads the fine line between disgust and heart stopping. Art is not just like every other city. Art is not homogeneous.

I've decided to pre-publish the slide show on OlyBlog that I've created for the presentation. This is for those of you who are interested but cannot attend, or those who like to see the outline without the fill.

explain more here

Is "My desire is to see Olympia help its artists realize our city" a complete sentence, or did you miss an "its" before city?

If it is complete, please explain more.

realize

In the sense of making real/tangible an idea. Directly what I mean is that there's a lot of talk about developing downtown with "market rate" housing and I think it would be a culturally disastrous mistake to go into this development phase without working with our artists to flesh out the city's character. Unless we want a strip mall to take the place of downtown Olympia, that is.

This is great

The amount of time and passion you put into this is really evident. Have you found people in other cities who are documenting urban art in similar ways?
»

I don't know...

My motivation for documentation are a cross between starting to compile a historic database for our city as well as to help make a case for further civic & citizen investment in our local artists. I haven't come across anyone else yet who is aggregating with quite that same goal in mind, but I'm also a neophyte to this movement.

There are people all over the world taking pictures of some amazing uncommissioned art. And some of the links I put at the end of the slide show will take you to repositories of those pictures. Flickr and the Creative Commons license were a god send for this project...in fact I have no idea how I would have put it together without that resource at my disposal.

Sorry I could not be there. I hope this evolves into a long-time gig where many of us get a chance to see it. You are a true documentarian/anthropologist who deserves more attention for your original and unique efforts.

you're ahead of your time

Thank you. The reality, I think, is that this is one of those projects which start to gain traction around year five...or fifteen. So long as I don't kick my bucket between now and then and you're around to greet me, I'll better fit your kind words.

I think it would be great to give this presentation again. I think it behooves us to have a genuine conversation about these arts lest we keep pouring our resources away. Sometimes the hole is bigger than the world the dirt is coming from, y'know?

I'm not sure...

If you're having a difficult time reading the interviews at its source, then I'm not sure. Let me know after following that hyperlink if it's still an issue for you; if so I'll e-mail you the interviews.
