Given the proliferation of Washington State Symbols (most recently the Washington State Vegetable), I would like to nominate the Mountain Beaver as the Washington State Rodent. Hey, we have an official Washington State Tartan. How ridiculous and ethno-centric is that? And I'm writing as an American with a healthy percentage of Scot-Irish blood, and as a Washingtonian with pioneer heritage to boot. We need to honor the Mountain Beaver.

Now settle down OlyBloggers. I can hear the protest swelling out there. I know you want to name the Nutria, also known as the Swamp Rat, as the official rodent. But they are an invasive species. The sympathy factor that they have been brought to the Fetid Lake of Doom (formerly known as Capitol Lake) by the Caiman Master in order to feed his reptilian pets doesn't apply.

My main point is this: the Mountain Beaver is a living fossil once plentiful across the continent but now confined to the Pacific Northwest. I also love the fact that when I tell newcomers about them they think I'm talking about a creature that belongs in the realm of cryptozoology. But they are very real. They used to dig tunnels in our front yard at the farm where I grew up. Write to your legislators. Let's do the right thing. Washington needs an official rodent, and, in any subsequent comments, please refrain from nominating local political figures such as (just for an example, far be it from me to make any insinuations here) Gary Locke, Timmy Eyman, any of the Grays Harbor County Commissioners, any fellow OlyBloggers, or other public figures as a way of making a political point.

(My apologies in the Grays Harbor County Commissioners link. It was a cheap shot. The 3 Stooges didn't deserve the insult.)

It is only fitting, Olympia does have an official rodent

Jeff Kingsbury

Official City of Olympia Rodent

What beady eyes has Jeff.

Crenshaw, as much as I

Crenshaw, as much as I sympathize with your view, even as an out-of-county resident, Jeff remains outside the scope of my proposal. He is a human being, although not a very adept politician. Like many other local small-time politicians he means well but something happens to them. Even here in little old McCleary I see it. A tiny bit of prestige and power changes people.

I'm looking for rodents of the literal kind. I know, I know. It is too inviting, but resist. However, as a fellow torchbearer of OlyBlog institutional memory, I'll provide this link to help your case. As a matter of fact, I was present in the audience when this was videotaped. OlyBlog trivia: It is highly probable my very own daughter was behind the camera that taped this clip.

well, getting to the matter at hand

It is my understanding that the mountain beaver is not a true beaver at all. I am not certain that a false beaver would be a worthy candidate for state rodent even if it were a true rodent. I believe that the state rodent has to be above reproach, not unlike Caesar's wife. Given the so-called mountain "beaver"'s status I think we should not give it further consideration. Let's face it, rodents get a pretty bad rap to begin with.

A good point. However, in a

A good point. However, in a state where Democrats like Gary Locke act like Republicans, and Republicans like Dan Evans act like Democrats, the fact that the Mountain Beaver isn't really a beaver should be no problem. I do recognize, however, that Dan Evans Republicans are an endangered species, more so than my would-be official rodent friend. According to the always-suspect Wikipedia, the Mountain beaver is also called "Boomer, Ground Bear, and Giant Mole," three names I've never heard applied to this most mysterious rodent. And all three names, like that of "Mountain Beaver," as you pointed out, are misleading. Speaking as a Boomer myself, I never saw one of these creatures taking part in typical Boomer type activities along with the rest of us, and it certainly isn't a bear or a mole. Maybe I should call it by the proper name-- Aplodontia rufa. The fact it has no popular name that accurately describes it seems to me to add to the enigma of the creature. And since our fine state is never fully understood by the outside world, it seems like a fine candidate for State Rodent to me.

so besides not being a beaver

A. rufa apparently eschews the mountains as well. I must say, however, I do find the critter intriguing. So what we have is something that is not mountain dwelling nor a beaver. I'm inclined to believe that it is the perfect candidate for State Rodent. I do know some people in the state legislature, maybe I could could lobby for one of them to introduce a bill declaring A. rufa as State Rodent. I've certainly had fun learning about it and I suspect that the rest of Washington would do well to know more about this enigmatic rodent. In a state where the orca is the official mammal and the geoduck tried to sneak in as the state bird, A. rufa is a fine representative of our state's fauna.
