Nov 16 2007 - 7:00pm Nov 16 2007 - 10:00pm Corporate Lockdown (Prison for Profit) and Granito De Arena("Grain of Sand” about Public Education Privatization). Friday, November 16th, 7:00 pm LOCATION: Unitarian Universalist Congregation; Open to All; FREE; Donations Appreciated-- ($5 - $25) sliding scale PRESENTED BY: The Alliance for Democracy, South Puget Sound Chapter and The Social Justice Committee, Olympia Unitarian Universalist Congregation. Corporate Lockdown: About the privatization of the first adult correctional facility in Canada. The criminal justice system is clearly not working as per its mandate; to keep communities safer or to rehabilitate offenders – whether it is privately run or publicly operated. Corporate Lockdown takes a deeper look at the real agenda behind the increasingly global prison industrial complex. Granito De Arena: Granito de Arena is the story of resistance – the story of hundreds of thousands of public schoolteachers whose grassroots, non-violent movement took Mexico by surprise, and who have endured brutal repression in their 25-year struggle for social and economic justice in Mexico's public schools. This event is part of a regularly scheduled movie series that is sponsored by the Olympia Unitarian Universalist Congregation’s Social Justice Committee and the Alliance for Democracy’s, South Puget Sound Chapter. The series includes movies on Corporate Power, Consumerism with a Conscience, and Peace. Movies play on the FIRST (and sometimes SECOND) Friday(s) of EACH month at the Olympia Unitarian Universalist Congregation sanctuary. To find out more, visit www.sounddemocracy.org and www.olyuu.org. This screening – on Friday, November 16th, at 7:00 pm – will take place at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation Building in west Olympia. Immediately following, there will be a group discussion about the issues presented in the movie. The Alliance for Democracy (www.sounddemocracy.org) is a federal 501(c)(3)organization. AFD is dedicated to restoring democratic authority over government and corporations, reviving grassroots democracy, and establishing appropriate limits on corporate influence. The Olympia Unitarian Universalist Congregation (www.olyuu.org) is part of a liberal religious tradition embracing the fullness of our humanity, including a commitment to promote greater justice in the world. The social justice committee’s movie series current themes include Anti-War and Consumerism with a Conscience. For more information, contact Jacqui at 360-236-9684 or jacquiAFD@comcast.net. |
