Submitted by crashnostar on Mon, 06/25/2007 - 11:47am.I work not more than a block from the 4th and Chestnut intersection, and I cross it every day. It is an extremely dangerous place to cross. While you may be able to get the vehicle in the lane closest to you to stop for you, the third and second lane traffic hardly ever stop unless you are already in their lane. This recent accident reported in the Olympian where a motorist hit a pedestrain is not the first time there has been a pedestrian hit in that intersection. There is a lot of foot traffick in that intersection due to social services in the area, and I wish the city would put in either a cross walk, or those flashing lights that let motorist know there is a pedestrain about to cross.
Ill get my video camera on it this week..

Submitted by bubba z (not verified) on Mon, 06/25/2007 - 11:38pm.City planners dont help matters when they continue to spend all of our resources catering to rampant car culture.
It should go without debate that people need to get out of their cars and start walking, biking, and using mass transportation. Leaving out the obvious fuel and pollution issues, we are eventually just going to physically run out of room on the roads for all of the vehicles. This is obvious in a place like Olympia, where we are just about at maximum capacity now, and its just going to get worse.
The City of Olympia is throwing chump change at our important crosswalks and pedestrian corridors. "Pedestrian safety" was all the rage last year. Laws were being passed, discussion was happening. And then *poof*, it all just stopped. The shoppers, um, i mean, "pedestrians", must be "safe" now, and we can go on to more important and expensive projects that will bring more and more traffic to this area, with shit for planning. These people talk a good talk when it comes to any real pedestrian safety, but if you look at the "planning" they have in mind, we will have to wait 15yrs for any results.
Underwater city halls and parking garages, meanwhile, will get put on the fast and expensive track & the website will continue to look all spiffy and rich yuppy.
The City hardly even maintains the stuff they brag to everyone about right now. Our notable bike trails are all fucked up and littered with trash. The crosswalks are broke and messed up too, and we dont have enough of them.
Pedestrians should use caution as well as drivers
Submitted by hammered on Mon, 06/25/2007 - 9:46pm.Drivers Responsibility
Submitted by bubba z (not verified) on Mon, 06/25/2007 - 11:04pm.I do agree that pedestrians need to be aware. But there are 2 completely different processes at work. Walking is a natural thing. Driving is not a natural thing. When someone is driving, they are actually operating a piece of heavy machinery. There is a whole other level of awareness and responsibility that goes along with that. Unfortunately, many drivers dont understand this. Too many drivers place others in harms way when they speed, blow through red lights, dont yield, talk on phones, and generally act like assholes on the road.
Both Parties Are Responsible
Submitted by Ehver Green on Tue, 06/26/2007 - 5:55am.No, both parties are responsible. Once *BOTH* sides of the equation get this concept we can move forward.
Why do pedestrians (of which I'm often one) think they own the world? Stop blaming others and take control of your own destiny. Yes, you may have the right away, and your family may win tons of money in court should you die, but wouldn't it be a whole lot easier to step back and not go man vs. machine? I can't think of a light in Olympia that last longer than 60 seconds...
Oh yeah..
Submitted by bubba z (not verified) on Tue, 06/26/2007 - 8:31am.I almost forgot..
Pedestrians have the right of way too, and your family can win tons of money suing drivers for traffic incidents..
This is good for pedestrians to remember the next time that car drives through the crosswalk while the pedestrian cross signal is white..
Who knows, they just may "nudge" you ever so slightly (its good to have a pen and paper handy for the license #)
Then you can take control of your destiny with their insurance company's $$.
Although I understand what you mean...
Submitted by Norm on Tue, 06/26/2007 - 8:45am.and agree with you, there is a difference in responsibility also. If you are a pedestrian and get hit you might die. If you are a driver you may go to prison. Right there you have a fundamental difference in legal responsibility. I've seen some dumb pedestrians but I also know that, no matter what, I am the one responsible for my machinery.
Even if you are legally in the right there are the psychological implications. If you are driving down Martin Way and a 4 y/o darts across the street and you hit him/her while doing the speed limit you probably won't get in (criminal) trouble. I don't know about you but even if I was "in the right" I'd feel pretty crappy. Yes, pedestrians need to use common sense. Frequently though I think there are dumb people in public, and I'd rather have them as a pedestrian than behind the wheel. If that means I have to be more cautious while driving, so be it.

You are much wiser than Uncle Ben my friend..
You are approaching Uncle Jesse with that wisdom..
