The City of Olympia decided late last year to fund a Chief's Forum as a way to generate police accountability. So far, seven people have applied for nomination to this board.

Norman L Overdahl -US Army, Retired Colonel (28yrs) and North Thurston HS Transportation 1984-1999 (Retired)

Jim Boyde – former General Manager at Capital Mall and candidate for Oly City Council against Matt Green (2002?) (Jim lost with 45% of the vote... after living here 2 years!)

Mark A Axtell – Olympia PD Reserve officer, 1980’s; WA Corrections Officer 1981-1984; current board member of the NE Neighborhood Association.

John W Sleeter – Thurston County Superior Court Administrator (retired); WA Commission on Judicial Conduct since 8/05 and currently; Regional Justice Center Board (retired).

Susan I Gallagher – Special Education Teacher, Komachin Middle School and Bread and Roses volunteer cook twice a month.

Paul Seabert – Olympia Downtown Association Safety Committee, Wind Up Here (Retired)

Donald G Lewis – Owner, Donlad G Lewis LLC, a Transportation Consulting business; WA Utilities and Transportation Commission regulator 25+ years; WA State Patrol 1995-2000 Sworn (armed) officer (Retired). Also works with CYS transitional housing and with Bread and Roses, serving food.

Will Drew be joining the Chief's Forum? Heck no!

The requirements include being fingerprinted, for one thing. That's something I'll endure only if I'm arrested, thank you. I don't feel like allowing the FBI to accidentally match my fingerprint with a suspect print in some bombing case, say in Spain for instance. Such as happened to that attorney in Oregon.

Besides, he can hear me when I report to the Oly City Council. Or I could write him a letter. Or you could write him a letter.

If you would like to you may discuss this at OlyCopWatch Forum Or here.

Well, there was that time in

Well, there was that time in College when I wrote the First Amendment to the US Constitution on the sidewalk in front of my University Library, with chalk. They took me down to the station and yelled at me for a while. Think it was a demerit or some such thing, if I avoided arrest no problems would happen, etc. They didn't even handcuff me, much less photos and prints.

Why would they need to finger

Why would they need to finger print?

Supposedly because they have

Supposedly because they have a secure facility where they meet - but the meetings are also open to the public. It does not make sense to me either, honestly. But then the whole idea is a little odd to me - a two hour meeting every other month, Chief sets the agenda, participation closed - what could facilitate communication and listening better than that? Maybe listening to FRO 98.5FM every Tuesday at 5pm?

Maybe they want to do a

Maybe they want to do a background check to make sure that the candidates do not have a secret history of criminal activity. Think about it; what a great position for a criminal to be in? Chief of Police! And it wouldn't be the first time having a crime boss in an elected office.

This way, there is less likelihood that someone who has been involved in crime circuits, and has left his finger prints here and there, (yet has managed to elude apprehension,) could run for office and potentially win an election.

Uhm, I can see why

Uhm, I can see why embarassment would be an issue, but the Chief is not being REPLACED, he's adopting a pet subcommittee. These folks will not be the chief, they will not run for chief, because we do not elect police chiefs. Just the Sheriff.

I'm of two minds which is better, given our situation in this county...

Long before I advocate something as foolish as electing police officers, I would like to see just what we can accomplish with a little active oversight and threat of public censure or exposure. So far, we seem to see some institutional responses; "Let them eat Subcommittees."
