Hiya All--

Today I met Micheal Nutter(sp?) of the downtown Olympia jewelry store that bears his name (it is on Capital, near B&B).

I was taking my helmet off when he confronted me and asked that I lock my bike to the bike stand...and he was mean about...snide & condescending... I had just stopped and was not eve intending to lock my bike up there...

I have reached my patience limit when it comes to store-front owners thinking they can tell everyone how to act & what to do--

Without being civil, this guy expects others to act civil.

I'm really mad:the thing that really set me off, is that when I informed him that I am gonna post on olyblog(about his rude behavior), he said he is on the site alot(meaning olyblog), and that he could care less...

I can't remember the exact words, but he meant that since the folks on olyblog are not his customers, he could care less...

"no, really, I know that [the folks on olyblog] are not my customers"

This guy is clueless, as if he could tell where his customers are from...

Me?, I don't buy jewelry because most of it is not fair trade art, and I can make my own pieces if I want (liberal arts classes pay off!)

Most jewelry is not art, just a $tatu$ $ymbol for lo$ers...

So, I'm gonna make a point of talking to folks about this guy and raise awareness of how he treats folks in front of his store: I hate his "us vs them" mentality and his "class" identity...thinking that way is ignorant & just perpetuates stereotypes.

Class is dead!

Any thoughts?

So he is on Olyblog alot you say?

what is the name of his establishment?

Well, he's right about one

Well, he's right about one thing ~ I'm an Olyblogger and I'll never be one of his customers. Which means that all my friend's who aren't Olybloggers will avoid his shop as well. And their friends. And so on. Business owners need to understand that customer service and friendliness affects business. I promise that if you are nice to me and welcome me that I will be much more willing to drop some of our hard earned money into your establishment. The people at Traditions are wonderfully nice and I enjoy buying toys for my children there and also bring all my family when they visit from out of town. I adore the stuff at another store but I have been in there several times, sometimes alone and sometimes with a friend, and I have not been greeted ONCE!!! I just can't bring myself to buy anything from there. Maybe I'm weird but I just am not going to spend money where business owners or employees can't be bothered to be polite and welcoming to me.

I hate to break it to ya,

I hate to break it to ya, but Micael Nutter isn't really expecting your business.  On that note, he's an *ss and should be ignored - completely.  Don't even give him the time of day, just smile and walk away.

Thanks, I hear that! (I let him bring me down >my bad<)

two birds, one stone

You've got moles in a cage. You've got a Michael Nutter problem. The solution should be obvious. My question is who is Nutter expecting to be a customer? It seems that Nutter has a particular problem with bicycles and their riders. I think it is a mistake, however, to determine who a good customer is by bicycle ridership. I lived near Davis, CA for a while. Lot of money in Davis, lots of bicycle riders on very expensive bicycles. If Mrs. Moneybags wants to ride her bicyycle downtown on a sunny day and check out some jewelry will Nutter give her the bum's rush? People with lots of money do not take kindly to being treated badly. I also find, from a customer service perspective, that it is impossible to selectively treat people well. You can treat all of your customers and potential customers well or you can treat them poorly, but you can't manage to do both. False good customer service is transparent and it is even worse than bad customer service. I stand by my earlier prediction in another post, Nutter will be out of business by Thanksgiving. I just hope he doesn't leave the landlord holding the bag on the rent.

Solution: Sidewalk Chili Feed...

...and make sure the beans are undercooked.

Yeah. The same thing happened to me. The bike rack was fully occupied and I was going for coffee at B&B, so I went to lock up to the light pole. He came out and whined at me, "Not on public property, please. Use the bike rack." I ended up walking around the block to find appropriate bicycle parking.

I think the next time I'll just ignore him and lock up to the light pole. I'd be done my coffee before they could cut the lock.

Hmmm Phil

no turning the other cheek?

You are a leader for the downtown folks, particularly the homeless population.  Why don't you extend the olive branch to Mr. Nutter, and broker deal and maybe change how the man responds to people in front of his business?

You're right...

...I should try that.

But for the (brief) moment I'm just going cosider the implications of "turn the other cheek" in context of my comment on a "chili feed". ;)

Thanks for the reminder...

sometimes I get a little too hot-headed.

I was harassed after locking

I was harassed after locking my bike to the lamppost outside of his shop once. It was really unsettling. Mr. Nutter raised my guff on that occasion. Luckily, a sympathetic and kind customer service representative from a nearby establishment listened carefully to my complaint, which made it much better.

There have been a lot of complaints about Nutter's hostile / unwelcoming behavior.

In my dictionary one of the definitions of Nutter is "an insane person"

That said, I'm almost tempted to buy a cheap second-hand bike I don't want to keep just for the joy of walking it down the sidewalk and pausing near B&B.

That is the most blatent example of false advertising since my suit against the movie The NeverEnding Story

Mr. Nutter

If you ever hop onto the blog please keep this in mind:

I'm a single guy, I plan on getting married someday (pray for the poor woman) and if at all possible would like to buy wedding jewelery locally. I have purchased several pieces of jewelery in the last 10 years for girlfriends and family. Please don't assume that the people on Olyblog are not your intended customers. You may have driven a few of us away at this point though and that is very much your loss.
