In Olympia, with the exception of two areas downtown, the storm drain water does not go to the wastewater treatment plant. Instead, everything that goes into the storm drains ends up in a stormwater pond, a stream, and/or Puget Sound.

With all this water flowing it is a good time to remind ourselves to keep pollutants out of the water. Don't toss cigarette butts on the ground, don't pour hazardous household materials down drains, do pick up after pets, and do be mindful of our daily activities and how they affect our shared environment.

It's more than just what poll

It's more than just what pollutants are in stormwater, but the nature of the stormwater. Much of our area is covered in impervious surfaces, making it impossible for water to go where it once did (into the ground, as opposed to directly into a stream or river). Increased paving causes increased flooding during the winter and droughts in the summer.

When I walk across the mall parking lot I get a lesson in that fact, the whole area becomes an impervious basin.

Switching over to permeable pavements would be great, I wonder if more green roofs would help too.

I wonder too if rubber sidewalks will help in this regard, there is space between the panels at least.
