Was yesterday's anti-nazi protest metaphorically, "in the zone?"

In the Zone

Posted on Monday, January 23, 2006. From the transcript of radio communication among Israeli soldiers near Rafah, in the southern Gaza Strip. The recording was submitted in January 2005 in the trial of the company commander, whose name has been withheld due to a military court order. He faces a maximum of three years in prison. Translated from the Hebrew by Nomi Friedman. Originally from Harper's Magazine, May 2005.

My observation is that violence only breeds more violence.

Sometimes the best thing is to walk away from a situation, if at all possible.

I am continually astounded at the violence, which the Israeli state uses to enforce its rules and borders - given the treatment of the Jewish population in Europe by Nazi's. The behavior of this unit is an example of the extreme and atrocious violence that is employed by the IDF. Perhaps violence is all they know. If they don't know other ways to resolve conflicts, what choice do they have?

The response to nazi's in Olympia is similar. When the nazi's were met with jeers and an intense level of emotional violence, (bordering on physical), they were met once again with what they know best: maybe it's all they've ever known.

It's possible and likely that these nazi's grew up in hostile enivornments, where they were abused in multiple ways.

Now the peace movement chooses to abuse them too.

I would have liked to have had the opportunity to dialogue with one of these NSM activists, and possibly get to understand what motivates their vulgar displays and violent ethos.

In my opinion, there was an opportunity, but "we" blew it. Maybe next time we can set an example and entertain their imaginations - something better is possible.

I agree with everything you said except when you imply that the IDF is the only guilty party to heinous acts like this. I've heard many horrify tales from both sides.

Yes, you're correct and I concur. I should be more careful to acknowledge the terrorism of the palestinians. Neither is acceptable.

But the actions of the IDF is strikingly more nazi like in that it is nationalist in origin. - It is state sponsored terror.

The point is that a better world is possible, and that meeting violence with violence has proven historically to be ineffective in the production of real social change.
