And we thought the expansion of power here in the US was broad.

Charles Clarke, the Home Secretary, is facing an onslaught over the Government's anti-terror laws after figures showed nearly 36,000 people were stopped and searched under the emergency powers last year. The number of people stopped and searched each year has soared since the Act came into force in 2001, when 10,200 people were stopped. It rose to 33,800 in 2003-04.

I remember this happening on

I remember this happening on our subways as well. I also clearly remember a photo of a subway train in D.C. with a semi-automic wielding security guard dressed in full combat garb.

The article described what is

The article described what is happening in London as completely different from the US. One person in the article mentioned being a part of a traffic stop and having his van searched.

To my knowledge, this is not widespread in the US. The Olympia Police Department is not stopping people because of power given to it by the Patriot Act. If they are, I'm certainly not aware of it. Now, I have heard of the federal government exercising power which they otherwise wouldn't have been able to were it not for the Patriot Act but they do at least involve investigations, warrants, et cetera. And I certainly don't think such action has involved the same number of people as in the UK, though I don't know for sure and am simply making an assumption based on what I've read.

About having law enforcement in full-combat garb. I see that as law enforcement advancing with the possible threat, similar to officers wearing body armor and, after the North Hollywood bank robbery, having access to assault rifles.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Olympia did away with the Patriot Act, right?

I'm a little surprised it would go so far in England.

A municipality can't do away

A municipality can't do away with a piece of federal legislation.

The City of Olympia has tried to direct members of law enforcement (and other City employees) to ignore the Patriot Act but no, they can't out and out get rid of it and there's little they could do if law enforcement cited the Patriot Act as a reason for taking action XYZ.
