This initial meeting is to begin discussion and planning concerning the announced plans of a major Neo-Nazi group, National Socialist Movement, to hold a 3 day rally in Olympia at the capitol.

Look for yellow sign at a table that reads "Olympia says: NO to Nazis" (from last rally) to find us.

We've confirmed that the NSM does have a permit. (Update: NSM has a permit for 2-4pm Capitol steps, July 2nd. No camping will be allowed at Capitol.)

All welcome on discussion list Oly Unity

Yep, it is public, word can be passed on. I figure if lots of us show up, we may find that we ultimately want to break up into affinity groups, lots of possibilities. Everyone welcome.

I've also already heard of another coalition group in the works that will announce a meeting later in month.

What sorts of responses are being considered besides a counter protest? Is it possible to set up a few public forums and educational presentations before, during and after the nazi rally? What if we were to get the schools involved, before the nazi's do? What if . . . . the ideas are ours to manifest.

I think it is all possible and more. We have all this advance time. Individuals and groups can work on related projects that interest them.

Pro-active is exactly what is being spoken about too, to make all this time one of education.

All this is just now rolling out, first meetings are being organized, word spread. Easily groups of friends could organize for whatever they want to do. Any groups that are public will be putting out the word as to meeting times etc.

I'm not part of any organized group, but being familiar with Southern Poverty Law Center, I will contact them about getting presentations into schools near the end of the school year before the nazi's show up. They have a terrific program called Teaching Tolerance. It includes a small booklet called 10 Ways To Fight Hate that is exceptional.

Isn't the public school system supposed to be about academic education?

The word academic indicates a

The word academic indicates an emphasis on study and reading rather than practical application, so in that sense it's the ultimate activity that informs what we consider public. What informs the public to a large extent these days is little reading and no study beyond recieved ideas promulgated by mass media to a largely passive audience. This includes most of the public school system. To educate is defined as giving intellectual, moral and social instruction to someone, which again indicates the public. Education also has it's roots in nourishment, which implicates a congruency in the desire for knowledge that is liberal, i.e. generous. Liberal arts education used to be the standard in our nation, before the advent of specialties, the idea being we become well rounded, larger than before, individuals who bring a generosity of ideas to a public forum. Teaching tolerance seems to fit that model.

olyrickm: to educate is defined as giving intellectual, moral and social instruction

The Fire: Do you think the public education system should be involved with teaching morality?

I'll be upfront: I think the focus should be on reading, 'riting, and 'rithmatic.

While our public education system is worried about everyone feeling good about each other, the rest of the world is more concerned with tangible results.

Yes. Absolutely. Yes What is

Yes. Absolutely. Yes What is morality but the difference between right and wrong? Is it the schools job to decide what is right or wrong? No. But to engage students in the exploration of what is right or wrong is essential. If it weren't for public education many of us would be saddled with the prejudices and stereotypes of our parents and beyond. I grew up in a house where Black people were niggers and Italians were guineas and Puerto Rican's were spics and Jews were kikes. Homosexuals were unthinkable and retarded people were game for any joke. When I was 12 years old I went to the corner deli for my mother. She wanted a loaf of Italian bread for our pasta dinner. I walked the mile or so to the store and when the owner asked what I needed, I said, " a loaf of guiniea bread." He looked at me like I was scum. "What did you say?" Quickly realizing what I said, I replied, "a loaf of Italian bread." If it weren't for public education I would not have known my error. I felt ashamed beyond description It was an academic and public educational event for me. I have a son who is almost 16. When he was 12 he asked me, "Dad, what does nigger mean?" He heard the word at school.

Sounds like a great idea. A full house turned out to see Morris Dees out at TESC and I remember talking with a local teacher (don't recall who) who is using some of that program.

I'm not really part of any organized group either here in town, though groups and coalitions are forming rapidly. I put together a blog then opened up a discussion group to take on some of the overflow from other lists.

Friday meeting is an ad-hoc group specifically in response to the NSM in town, all welcome.
