From The Olympian:

At least a handful of South Sound bar and tavern owners say the state's new smoking ban may force them out of business this year.

The owners who used to allow smoking say business is significantly down, and that new customers have not come calling since the ban went into effect in December.

In any case, it would show support for the ban to go have few beers in your favorite pub.

I'm told that another impact of the smoking ban is that most if not all outdoor ashtrays have been removed and that the streets and sidewalks are now extra littered with cigarette butts.

I've also noticed the removal of many benches, including up at the mall, benches that were used by non-smokers also.

I know of a coffee house downtown that had a few chairs and tables outside the front door for customers, including smokers. I'm told that complaints to the health department came in about people still smoking outside, too close to front door. Health department stuck signs on the outdoor tables, but complaints still came in.

Health department spoke to staff, but really, what can the staff do? They are not able to patrol the outside sidewalk.

I do like Rick's idea on how to show support for the businesses, in this case, the pubs.

Perhaps it's time for these pubs to allow smoking again. I know of a few that have. The fact is that it is an unenforceable law, and it was hastily passed without any thought being given as to how to enforce it, except heaping that duty onto the already strapped health department and cops.

I don't smoke, and often I can't safely be around cigarette smoke, it is a migraine trigger. And I hate how the smell lingers on clothing.

But I actually think some pubs should be able to allow smoking.

Does "unfunded mandate" fit this law? No funds for enforcement.
