Bayview Thriftway downtown can be expensive. Very. But I patronize them often because they house one of my favorite Oly places. Upstairs.

I usually buy something first at Dancing Goats espresso bar at the entrance. Good coffee, good pumpkin bread. I might fill this out with fruit and yogurt from the main store. On through past the deli there are stairs leading up.

Nice big room with plenty of chairs and tables and all those windows. This is a prime spot for staying warm while gazing out over the water. Olympics can be seen on clear days.

The water is always different, wonderful to watch. And there are birds. Today I saw three herons on their own individual perch poles, soaking up what sun there was. I've seen kingfishers and other birds that I don't know the name of, wide variety. Always plenty of gulls and crows. Bald eagles will be returning in a few months.

Seals can often be spied and even otters. There are boats to watch and strolling people to observe. There is even the added thrill of the Bayview produce section pseudo-thunder and rain storm machine that mists the fruits and vegies below.

I've enjoyed gray rainy days there and sunny ones also. Tables are good sized for writing and studying. Great place to take in a Budd Bay view.

Just two weeks ago I saw a bald eagle giving a juvenile gull the chase of its life. I thought the young gull was a goner, when the eagle suddenly dropped pursuit. Baldies actually make the Puget Sound region home year round.

This morning I saw two golden eagles riding thermals near Evergreen. That was pretty awesome.

I agree with you, the Bay View café is a sweet spot.

What do people think about Storman's?

I think they're fine folks. A little too eager to show what good Christians they are, but they have two of the bests stores in Oly in an industry with the smallest profit margins.

They've treated people a little poorly from my experience.

A Storman's official once said they would not sponsor or support a Bread And Roses event because "Bread And Roses does not do enough to isolate the homeless population."

I really don't know what that is even supposed to mean, but I don't think it was said out of love. The people that work at Ralph's and Bayview are great, I have no problem with the employees. When there are folks setting policies at the top, it has an effect on how day to day operations are carried out.

I also disagree with their shoplifting policy, which is related, but a different conversation.

Don't shoplift and the policy

Don't shoplift and the policy won't be a problem.

Thats kind of an easy argument, but I agree with you, and I also think that it borders on extortion.

See, I don't think so at all.

See, I don't think so at all.

It's obviously a matter between two parties (the offender and the company).

However they can reach an agreement for restitution is up to them.

It's really no different than a negotiation. If you and the company can negotiate an agreement, that's great. It probably wouldn't happen, but a person could attempt to negotiate with the representative of the store to reach an agreement other than paying the fine on the spot.

Shoplifting isn't a matter where the police need to be involved but I don't have a problem with the government (police) acting as an arbitrator when there's a dispute between two parties that can't be resolved.

They say: "Give us $200 or we are going to call the cops." There is no negotiation, no payment plan. What people should know is that the police won't come if it's less than $50 worth of stuff that is stolen, so their threats are kind of meaningless.
»

I said they probably wouldn't

I said they probably wouldn't listen, but it is a negotiation.

One side (Bayview) is simply firm on what they're negotiating for. If they wanted, they could budge on asking for $200 on the spot.

The police won't come if there's less than $50 worth of merchandise stolen? Do you mean that they will make it an extremely low priority or that the police department won't even take the complaint?

»

I don't think you would get OPD to admit it, but this is definetly a low priority to them, and I've heard from two different inside sources that the cops won't come for under $50.

I'm sure they would admit it.

I'm sure they would admit it.

I don't think many have the misconception that the police are going to rush over with their lights and sirens for a petty crime.

I was simply asking if the under $50 was policy/law or if you were just pointing out the reality on the ground.

Also the way the mercenari- oops - security treats people is an issue. I've heard stories of name calling and tackling and just simple disrespect of people. They don't listen to any explantion, say it was actually an accident, they don't care.

To be fair, the article did point out there is no way of knowing whether a person was actually absent minded or whether the excuse is simply an attempt to play on potential good faith on the part of the store (e.g. they believe you and let you off).

It's probably easier for the store to assume everyone who has left the store with merchandise is shoplifting.

Guilty until proven innocent? Is that how it goes?

In the judicial system you ar

In the judicial system you are innocent until proven guilty.

In this instance, you're whatever the store determines you to be.

If you're innocent, get an arbitrator (police).

If you're guilty, well...Wheel and deal.
